I liked Nycholat in the few games he played in Ottawa. He seemed calm, took the body when it didn't take him out of position, and seemed to know what to do with the puck. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up being a solid fill-in for the Canucks.

He's on a one-way contract:

Enfin, Lawrence Nycholat pourrait bien entreprendre la saison à Ottawa, puisque son contrat lui assure de toucher un salaire de la LNH en 2008-2009. Ce fut une des dernières décisions prises par John Muckler avant son congédiement.

Interesting trade.

I think Ottawa is more likely to 'win' this trade, as Shannon is younger and I think he does have some top-6 potential if he can find the right situation where he can get some icetime with solid players.

However, that doesn't mean this isn't a good trade for us. Shannon wasn't going to see any icetime here with the addition of Krog and Wellwood and the development of Grabner, so it was hard to see where he fit. Nycholat is a much better organizational fit, either as the 8th defender playing in Manitoba or as a #7 guy if we move another defender in a trade for a forward. This seems quite likely given his contract status.

Good luck to Shannon, seemed like a good guy. Did we just trade our only player with a Stanley Cup ring?

Nycholat's on a one way so I think the plan would be to have him stick on your team, and you could then trade another D for a forward.

He's a good player. A solid skater and puck mover. Kind of reminds me of Brian Pothier... a guy who was an allstar AHLer until 26 or so, and then finally cracked the NHL and became a very serviceable defenseman.

I think this could spell the end of Lukas Krajicek, to be honest. Similar role to what would be expected of Krajicek (assuming he makes the team, and that Davison is our reserve d-man).

Davison will be on the Canucks roster in some form based on what Gillis said. Gillis stated that Davison needs an opportunity to flourish in and in NY he was playing 20 minutes a game for the Islanders.

I liked him - Murray didn't see his potential I guess. He's got good upside, just needs a chance.

Also a One-Way contract, so Moose may not be possible.

Moose is possible...but do they want to be paying that huge contract for an AHLer?

Well, they were willing to pony up for Krog, so it's entirely possible.

Now that I think of it, if the team was trading one of their defensemen, it would make more sense to pick up one of the veteran players still available who could likely be had for relatively cheap to fill in than it would to trade for a fringe player like Nycholat.

It's probably a case of dealing from a position of strength on the Moose to address another area on the team.

If Sundin doesn't sign in Vancouver - it's not like the Canucks payroll won't be that great. Nothing wrong with going with eight defensemen (considering the injury prone-ness of some of our players).

They may.

They seem willing to do so with Krog. I think it's possible that Winnipeg is trying to load their team up this year to try to win a championship, so they'll look like a good location for a NHL expansion team.

How many players allowed on an NHL roster, 23? So it looks like:

Sedin-Sedin-Bernier
Raymond-Wellwood-Demitra
Burrows-Kesler-Hansen/Pyatt
Pyatt/Hordichuk-Johnson-Pettinger
Cowan

Assuming Brown doesn't make it and Hansen does, well have to move/waive a forward.

Ohlund-Salo
Mitchell-Bieksa
Edler-Krajicek
Nycholat
Davison

Luongo
Sanford

So? 13 forwards, 8 D, 2 Goalies.

Maybe we should put Cowan with the Sedins for week, get his point total up and move him for a second rounder.

Please refrain from posting our lines. That sad set of forwards reminds me of, oh, the last two years. Depressing.
