IMMORTAL RANGER: You guys get mentioned because you're the type of team Gaborik would play for. NY isn't afraid to give out a pay-day... hence why a goal-scorer in his prime would likely be linked here.
You'd have to give up a good amount for him... but he would LOVE New York... and likely thrive out here. Poor man's Bure that can actually score in New York?
Who would you give up? Dubinsky, 1st rounder next year, 3rd in '10??
Would you give that up? Is that enough for Gabby? Remember, Minnesota has ZERO offense if he leaves. They lost Rolston and Demitra. All they have left is Piere-Marc Bouchard.
They're pretty solid on D... so I'm not sure if they would *need* to include Staal on this deal. Interesting thoughts.
Hossa was clearly a rental though. Different story with Gaborik I think. If the Rangers trade for him they're going to make sure they can sign him
True enough. I would think he would have to agree to an extension before any deal was made. Even if he didn't you're talking about having a player for an entire season, not just the final quarter and playoffs.
Gomez has a NTC. And wouldn't the though be to play Gaborik with Gomez?
I don't see what leverage do the Rangers have. If the Wild can't sign him, they can deal him to any team in the league — it doesn't have to be the Rangers.
Gomez has a limited NTC. Only 3 teams per year he can block.
secondly if we wanted to get Gabby, Gomez would have to go so we can sign him. Not that I want to trade him b/c I would like for gomez to center Gabby but he is the ONLY choice to be traded b/c of cap reasons.
Look at our high priced players that we need to get rid of to open up cap space so we can resign Gabby (and also Zherdev, Staal, Dubi etc.)
Lundy - obviously can't trade him
Redden - would like to shed that contract but Minn doesn't need dmen (especially older overpriced ones)
Rosy - see Redden
Drury - would love to kick that contract out the door but sadly he has a NMC
Naslund - has an NMC
that leaves Gomez as the ONLY logical choice. Plus we do have plenty of centers on this team w/ Drury, Dubi, Ani, Korps that we can still fill a lineup w/ quality centers.
But Gomez ISN'T the logical choice because either side would love to pair Gaborik+Gomez, so that trade does neither side much good.
ok. first off Minn getting Gomez and chery would do them good as they get a good center, and a good RW prospect. I fail to see how this wouldn't be good from Minnys standpoint, especially since they are void of offense. Them taking Rosy or Redden from us would do them no good, as they are already strong defensively. So really it is a logical choice for Minny.
From the Rangers standpoint it is a little muddier. You definately upgrade our top 6 wings. Now we would have Gabby, Zherdev, Naslund, Dawes. That's pretty solid. Also Drury, would be a good center, probably w/ say Dawes and Zherdev.
Dubinksy and Anisimov are the key to this. as Ani would need to be ready for at least 3c duties (although Korps might be able to handle it). We already know that Dubi can handle some 1c duties. And a line of Nazzy, Dubi, Gabby doesn't sound all too bad.
Gabby is a unique player, who is better than Gomez. he can carry a team, and transform a game (when healthy). he is also young (not saying Gomez is old) and just about to start hitting his prime.
Plus we are loaded w/ Center prospects. Dubi, Ani, Korps, Stepan, and I can't remember if Grachev is or isn't. Plus don't forget Pyatt, and Dupont, and whoever else we draft over the years.
Gabby>Gomez, and won't cost much more (especially b/c of his medical history that he might not be able to command $8mil/season).
there really is no logical choice of players to be moved to bring in Gaborik. There is a salary cap. This isn't 1999 anymore. Every big ticket player is still rumored to come to NYC, and the Rangers have zero cap availability (and have dead cap space from last season, not to mention four players earning more than $6MM this coming season) and since there is a cap there are any number of teams who can afford to spend as much as the Rangers. Gaborik would be great to have - but do the Rangers even have the assets for a trade, and then how do you logically make room to fit him in? Oh, and this goes along with Sundin, Shanny and whoever may be available out there.
As an aside, the only logical player the Rangers should trade to clear space for Gaborik is Drury, but I'm not sure who out there (among the few teams to which he'd allow himself to be traded) would take on Drury and if there would be a piece that can be included in a Gaborik trade.
