Ryan O'Byrne

What is his offensive potential? And on what pairing will he likely be playing this upcoming season?

He will play with Hamrlik. Not much offensive upside. Good skater for his size. He will be more of a hard-hitting-defensive-D-man-that-can-drop'em-and-skates-really-well-for-his-size.
He'll be a 15-25 pts getter IMO. I expect him to hit more this season because he was told to tone it down a bit and concentrate on learning the game back in college. Now that he knows he belongs, he'll hit more.

He is very tall and big. Good guy to have around.

Hope that helps.

Paul Coffey career numbers imo. With a more stalwart defensive game.

I think he'll be limited to having a decent first pass, which is all they ask of him in terms of "offensive production". Anything else will be a bonus.

I pity the fool who takes O'Byrne in a pool.

I'm not saying he can be Bobby Orr, but I think he has the potential to be.

Ryan to me has an upside like Komisarek, not very offensive but deadly defensively and physically with great skating. I think with the D on the team he will get to develop at his pace and should draw from his fellow Defencemen all he needs to become a dominant Defensive defenceman for a long time.

Offense from the defense seems to be almost exclusively reserved to guys who are mobile at the back end. Even Souray, Chara and Pronger are a lot more mobile than O'Byrne.

The best hope for O'Byrne is to become a solid, stay-at-home type defensemen who gives good bodychecks, ala Komisarek. I don't think he can get to Komi's level though because he's not as quick.

My two cents.

Do you watch the games or just read about them? If you watch them, do you do it at a bar? or do you watch the game at home? Do you actually pay attention or do you talk the whole time to your buddy an not really look the whole time?

cause O'byrne is faster than all the D you mentioned and i am at a loss as to how you came to your conclusions.

He fits the same mold as Komisarek, thats his upside, to be at the level Komisarek is (1st pairing, shut down-type).

He is more or less a lock to become a 2nd pairing shutdown defenseman.

If he play a complte season i see him getting around 15 points. He will most likely play with Hamrlik this season. ( 2nd pairing and 2nd PK. )

He doesn't even have the potential to be Chris Pronger.

Hell, the closest thing to Orr in the NHL right now is Niklas Lidstrom or Scott Neidermayer, and O'Byrne doesn't even have the potential to be them.

Stop overrating Hab players. You're just setting yourself up for disappointment. It's like when Higgins said he thinks he could score 40, so everyone believed he would, and when he didn't, they now want him gone. Aim low, be happy when they surpass it.

He was joking... To him, any marginal defenseman has the potential to be like Orr.

It's just my opinion, I'm entitled to it. I think you're selling him short - so what if I compare him to a player who's had a relatively successfull career?

Seriously, O'Byrne will not be a shutdown defensmen, he will be an all around player, and he has an offensive upside, i see him hetting 30 points a year for most of his career. He's gonna be a good 3rd-4th D. And that based on his skating and his ability to shoot the puck.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but opinions are devoid of facts, and the fact is, you're wrong

It's so sad that people in today's day and age believe that an opinion is somehow some indestructible device that allows them to state ridiculous things without consequence or correction. And people wonder why society is takng a nosedive like an eagle whose opinion is that its a worm
