That's good news. The Canucks pro scouting has been pretty bad. Or at least the Canucks under Burke and Nonis had a terrible habit of throwing away good picks or prospects for average at best deadline pick ups.

Mellanby was brought in months ago in a consultant/advisor capacity, so this is a new official title for him. I would say he probably had a big influence in signing Demitra and Johnson, two former teammates. Maybe even Hordichuk? Did they play together in Atlanta?

Good move, IMO. Any help we can give our scouting departments.

Yeah, from what I remember, at the time he was given the advisor spot because he wanted to remain stationed in St. Louis, and could fly out if Gillis needed him to check something out. I guess now he's ready to move up to a full-time position and hence the change in job title.

that was what I was talking about--it was just a press release giving him a title--he has been around for awhile

Mellanby being relatively newly retired still has connections to current NHLers he has played with. However as time goes on and those players retire, I wonder if he'll still be as effective at his job. I suppose it all comes down to whether he has an eye for talent (more specifically if their talent/character fits the needs of the team). Regardless it should be interesting to see how this pans out should he stay on with the Canucks for the long haul.

Do good players make good scouts?
God I hope so! We could really use an upgrade in this department

OT: Any chance you watch Reno 911 jumptheshark? They had a sketch on there of Lt. Dangle jumping an aquarium with a small shark in it on a bicycle, nearly killed me

"Jump the shark" is a common TV phrase for when shows 'pull out all the stops' for something absurd that makes no real sense in the show other than to draw in ratings. It originated with Happy Days, when the ratings were lagging in the later years, they would have Fonzy jump something with his motorcycle. Most famously, a shark. Arrested Development made a great play on this by having lawyer Barry Zuckercorn (Irwin Winkler, who played Fonzy) casually jump over a beached shark in an episode.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

Good for Mellanby. Hopefully we'll stop trading picks for crap at the deadline.

It's a pretty common phrase when talking about TV. I was just explaining it to him in case he thought it originated on Reno 911.
