Just for fun: Shanny or Sundin

Lets say Sather feels he MUST have one of these vets on the team opening night.

1. Friendly contract

2. Does not cost one of the core ( Gomez, Drury, Lundqvist etc) But lets say Mats costs a trade of Prucha + Sjostrum

You must choose and the time is running out

I actually would miss Shanny and Id be fine with him getting the spot if thats how it goes. Its been a long time since the Rangers roster did not have a Hall of Fame player onboard.

20+ years

Shanahan was one of my favorite players... but how ANYONE could pick him over Sundin at this point in their careers boggles my mind...

I can't believe I'm being forced to pick an elite offensive player who immediately makes any team he's on so much better at the expense of two incredibly marginal players

this is a cruel game

those who voted Sundin expecting a discount are crazy. shanny will play for 1 million while Sundin is sitting in Sweden eating sushi probably not even thinking about which team to pick. Like what Steve Yzerman said, either you retire right away or you keep playing. obviously his heart isnt in the game anymore. Shanny still wants to play and will take a 4 million dollar discount.

Theres actually a lot to be said for the player who is ready, bona fide and obviously wanting the job. Of course we dont know whats being said behind closed doors, but Shannys actions are golden

thats how i view it. its between A or B. A is better but has no clue what he is doing and probably doesnt care, while player B is wanting to stay where he has been for 2 years and is willing to take a 80% pay cut.

Well at this point we can see Shannys desire. Sundins desire is truly unknown to the fans.

well i would think if he has a desire he would've returned already. plus hes gonna cost at least 7 mil, plus a core player. and imo it is not worth it.

Yes. Putting aside contracts for a moment...

Shanny is all-time, Hall of Fame power forward, no doubt. But Sahnny is 2 years older, and at this point in his career, Shanny is best suited at a part-time PP & shootout specialist.

Sundin at 37 has remarkably not shown any signs whatsoever of slowing down. Look up his stats, including his +/- rating for a mostly bad team, for the last 10 years. His consistency has been amazing. How long this will last, who knows? But based on his play last season, he still has to be considered a first line player.

If Shanahan re-joined the team, he would, or at least should, only be used in the bottom six.

If Sundin joined the team, he'd easily become the best player on the roster not named Henrik.

Real tough dilemma.

Would prefer neither but if one had to happen I would take Sundin...Shanny can take a spot as one of our coaches.

I think Shanny brings more intangibles to this team than Sundin would, and for team chemistry, I think Shanny would be better than Sundin. Right now, with a roster loaded with lots of talent, potential talent, Shanny is the guy you want in the locker room.

Sundin can still skate and put up more points than the two highest paid skaters on our team so... Sundin.
