MANITOBA BISONS 2008-09

The pro hockey season is winding down but then university game has been over for a while. Teams are gearing up for the 2008-09 season already.

The Bisons will retain most of their team. However, they are losing four players, each of whom has not yet used up all five years' eligibility. All four have concluded their degrees.

The first to go was Krister Toews, who signed an ATO to be a 3rd goaltender for the Manitoba Moose. [LINK] It was then announced that Chris Falloon, Rob Smith, and Nick Cowan were off to the pros. [LINK] Falloon (tied for the team scoring lead) and Smith (d-man, captain) are off to the Fischtown Pinguins in Germany. Cowan is going to Tulsa of the CHL.

Looking ahead, the team had 2 announcements this week. First, the coaching staff is all returning. [LINK] Head coach Don MacGillivray received an extension earlier.

More importantly, the team has a new goaltender. Gavin McHale, who backstopped the Portage Terriers to the MJHL title is signed. [LINK] He also has some WHL experience. In the nets, the Bisons should have 3rd year backups Justin Harris and Steve Christie returning as well.

Also, advance season tickets can be bought [HERE].

NEW RECRUIT: NICK HOTSON

The link is [HERE].

He is a big right winger who formerly played for the Winnipeg Saints and then went on to the WHL, finishing off in Lethbridge.

TWO MORE NEW RECRUITS

The link is [HERE].

The players are Terrance Delaronde (LW) and Pierre-Paul Lamoureux (D), both 6' 1" WHL grads.

The Bison schedule [LINK] has now added their non-conference schedule. They again play at UND in a 3rd game in 3 nights after a weekend series, and again play Nebraska-Omaha in a similar arrangement. However, they will also play at Bemdiji in what would otherwise be a "bye" week.

I see that there is no mention of a Dauphin pre-season event this year so maybe that has been shelved. The exhibition season starts September 19th in Saskatown.

Pierre-Paul Lamoureux is a goon, and a bad one at that. For your sake, I hope he doesn't see much ice time for your team. One of the worst defensemen I've seen at the USHL level, and he takes constant dumb penalties. On top of that, he can't fight.

Terrible, terrible player.

TWEETY-BIRDS SIGN SIX

The link to an OSC story is [HERE].

Theran Yeo (Prince Albert, SK) - Brandon Wheat Kings - D
John Flatters (Calgary) - Saskatoon Blades - D
Brandon Campos (Port Coquitlam) - Chilliwack Bruins - F
Clayton Bauer (Kelowna, BC) - Everett Silvertips' - F
Brennan Sonne (Maple Ridge, BC) - Edmonton Oil Kings - F
Keith Voytechek (Sherwood Park, AB) - Moose Jaw Warriors - F

UBC seems to get a pretty good crop (on paper) every year. Let's see if this group lives up to their billing.

Cole Hunter is in and out of the line-up. He is basically a grinder.

Lenoski, Workman, and Hellyer played all year and are eligible to return.

McCrimmon was a mid-season addition and never played much. He came over from the NCAA.

We'll have to see how many come back. I know they are missing four players, including 3 of their better ones. However, last year's crop of newcomers one of the best so there will be some natural improvement.

I know that the play-by-play guys from Alberta seemed impressed with the team last year in the playoffs.

It will likely come down to goaltending, since they are losing Krister Toews.

NEW RECRUIT: GREG BELLER FROM BCHL

The link is [HERE] and here's a portion of the story:
Quote:
Vipers' Beller commits to U. of Manitoba Bisons

20-year old forward Greg Beller has committed to play next season with the University of Manitoba Bisons. Beller came to Vernon just before Christmas last season from Yale University. The New York Rangers draft pick scored 20 points in 23 regular season games and was a force in the playoffs.

The Vernon Vipers would like to congratulate Greg and wish him good luck next season.

With this latest commitment, every graduating Vipers player has secured an opportunity to play college or university hockey next season. This puts the season total of post secondary scholarships up to 11.
There is not a confirming story at the Bison site [LINK].

NEW RECRUIT: A.J. SPILLER FROM PORTAGE TERRIERS

The link is [HERE] from the Portage Daily Graphic. Here's a portion of the story:
Quote:
A.J. Spiller joins UofM Bisons

"We've just had camp this week, it's pretty exciting," Spiller said Monday. "I'll have to work hard to get into the lineup for sure."

The 21 year old led all Terriers defencemen in scoring in the 2007-08 season compiling nine goals and 36 assists. Spiller will have a familiar face behind the bench in Don MacGillivray. He mentored Spiller for two seasons as head coach of the Terriers before he was hired by the Bisons in 2006.
As with the last signing, there is not a confirming story at the Bison site [LINK].

The Bisons' exhibition season starts on Friday. A weekend 3-team round-robin is being held in Waywayseecappo.
Friday: Manitoba Bisons v Regina Cougars
Saturday: Regina Cougars v Saskatchewan Huskies
Sunday: Saskatchewan Huskies v Manitoba Bisons

I was hoping to see some sort of media coverage on training camp to see for sure who's back.

I would like to go see a game there but that weekend doesn't work. The Bisons play regular season games on Friday and Saturday that weekend. Bad timing, again.

The first weekly release of the season has been put out by Canada West. The pdf format link is [HERE] and the who;le release is reproduced on the CIS site [HERE]. The release has lots of stats and schedules but not anything on rosters or recruits.

HOCKEY SEASON ARRIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
... WITH VICTORY FOR HERD

September 12, 2008

REGINA COUGARS 1
MANITOBA BISONS 4

There are no links for the game. But the Bison site schedule page [LINK] at least has the score. This was the opener of a 3-way series in Waywayseecappo which also includes the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The Bisons roster page has been updated [LINK]. There are 17 players returning. Those not returning from last year's roster are:
  • #1 Justin Harris G
    #2 Mickey McCrimmon D
    #6 Rob Smith D
    #8 Kyle Nichols D
    #15 Jared Walker F
    #16 Chris Falloon F
    #20 Colin Lafreniere F
    #22 Wade Davison F
    #23 Nick Cowan F
    #35 Krister Toews G
Some new players at camp who were not previously reported (in this thread at least) are:
  • Patrick Flynn D - from Birtle and the Phoenix Polarbears
Adam Zacharias G - from St. Vital Victorias
Ben Lobb G - from Pembina Valley Twisters
Michael Falk F - from Winkler Flyers
Tyler Mistelbacher - from Winnipeg Saints
It's too bad Justin Harris is not back. With Krister Toews graduating this year there was an opportunity in goal. However with Gavin McHale coming in there will be an MJHL grad around with returnee Steve Christie. I guess the two MMJHL goaltenders will be fighting for the #3 spot. It would be good to see an MMJHLer move on up the hockey totem pole.

At other positions, I had hoped Jared Walker would return. He arrived after Christmas from the ECHL when he had to decide between pro and his scholarship. He must be trying a pro comeback.

Elsewhere ...

CALGARY DINOS 6
LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS 3

Canada West's stats have the same format as the AHL was using. [LINK]. It shows Calgary as having defeated Lethbridge 6-3 but had nothing on the Wayway tournament.

thanks for the great updates. I was at the game on Friday and Jared Walker played, and played great. He is wearing #16 this year. The Bisons looked great throughout the lineup. Any update on the Sunday afternoon game against Saskatchewan?

HERD LOSES
... place 2nd in tournament

September 14, 2008

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES 8
MANITOBA BISONS 1

Again, there are no links for the game except that the result is posted on the Bison site schedule page [LINK]. The Sask site also indicated a 3-3 tie with Regina on Saturday. If so, the final tournament standings would be:
1 - Saskatchewan
2 - Manitoba
3 - Regina

Thank-you for this infiormation. He is not listed on the web site roster. So I will be awaiting further updates to that roster.

I heard former MJHL superstar Bryan Kauk is playin for Saskatchewan? How is he lookin in the CIS so far? Could his MJHL pure dominance translate at the CIS level?

UPDATE

[Canada West weekend roundup: Huskies open preseason with CIS Classic title] - This story is on the CIS site. It includes round-ups of all games over the weekend. Here's what it had about the Bisons:
Quote:
...

Jared Walker and Nick Hatson each scored a goal and an assist to lead Manitoba to a season-opening 4-1 win over Regina in the opening game of the CIS Classic on September 12th. The Bisons built a 4-0 lead on goals by Walker, Tyler Mistelbacher, Jon Cara and Hatson before Dan Bohemier ruined Steve Christie's shutout bid at 12:50 of the third period.

It was Regina's turn to build a lead in the second game of the tournament but the Cougars could not hold on to a 3-1 lead and settled for a 3-3 overtime tie with Saskatchewan. Regina went up 2-0 in the first period on goals by Ryan Bender and Shayne Emmons before Steve DaSilva cut the Cougars lead in half with a shorthanded goal midway through the second period. Regina restored its two-goal lead on Ryan Cruse's powerplay goal three minutes into the final frame. Cue the comeback. DaSilva netted his second goal of the game at 8:51 and Colin Patterson sent the game to overtime with the game-tying goal at 14:40. There was no scoring in overtime.

Heading into the tournament's final game, Manitoba could earn its second consecutive tourney title with a win over Saskatchewan, but the Huskies would have none of that. Led Brett Novak's hat trick and Dan Erlandson's four assists, Saskatchewan captured the championship with an 8-1 victory over. After Terrance Delalonde opened the scoring for Manitoba at 3:53 it was all Saskatchewan.

The Huskies scored five times in the first 20 minutes as Jarrid Dowhay tied the score with his first of two goals at 7:04. Taylor Watt's powerplay goal made it 2-1 for the Huskies before Novak doubled the lead with two goals in a span of 11 seconds. Novak tallied his first goal at 15:54 and his second at 16:05 with Erlandson earning assists on both. Bryan Kauk rounded out the Huskies' scoring at 18:11.

Novak completed his hat trick with a powerplay goal at 11:20 of the second period with Erlandson earning his fourth assist of the game. Myles Zimmer and Dowhay completed the scoring for the Huskies., who outshot Manitoba 29-18. Fourth-year goaltender Jeff Harvey earned the win in goal for Saskatchewan, finishing the weekend with a win and a tie.

...
I'd be interested in knowing how the Bisons' goaltenders fared. It seems funny that Sask's #1 would get the decision in both games of an exhibition weekend.

Apparently he is playing, since they list him as a goal scorer. Usually, MJHL (or equivalent league) grads take a year or two to rise to the level of the WHL grads.

Christie was very solid in game #1 - he is an excellent puckhandling goalie and he was at his athletic best although not tested often. While I was not at the 2nd game, Gavin McHale struggled as was evident by his 8 goals in 29 shots. I would imagine that much of that was nerves as he started his first ever CIS game. Also, some of the Bison top players - Rumsey, Walker, Wild, Wood, Beller, Howarth, Brown were not dressed on Sunday.

Christie is a throw-back to the days of the small, quick goalie who went hot-and-cold. He has had some hot streaks and would likely appreciate the chance to be a starter (or a 50-50 guy) in his 3rd year. That line-up against Sask would be below even typical exhibition standards. Maybe they want to hold back something because they start the regular season in Saskatown.

I watched Christie play in Thunder Bay last year during the Varsity Cup. I must say I was very impressed. I found it interesting though that Manitoba played their starter against the much weaker teams from Toronto and York and played their backup against Lakehead. Anyways, in the first game against Lakehead, Manitoba was outshot 40-20 and gave up half a dozen breakaways. Christie was absolutely stellar in net and gave up only one goal. I know he got a round of applause from the Thunderwolves fans when the 3 stars were announced. Toews started in the final but was chased from the net I think half way through the game. Christie came in and really pulled it out for Manitoba. He was the best goalie in the tournament, I think. From what Iíve seen he has the skill to be a starter for sure Ö iím looking forward to watching him play again this Christmas Ö

Wow Novak got a hat trick. Wondered where Flynn ended up. And I would not be surprised if Nat Howard gets some time if Michael Falk does. Both played in Winkler last year but Howard put up better numbers. He is supposed to be going to the U of M, but I do not know if he wants to play hockey or not.

Hotson was a good pickup to. was very noticeable and impressive when I saw him in the 'Dub, took off with Lethbridge. surprised no pro team took interest, could have seen him getting a shot somewhere a NHL camp somewhere. probably would have been better off going the NCAA route after playing some games as a 16 year old in the MJ, 21, and he is still only 190 pounds at a height of 6'4 if his hockeydb stats are right, would have just given him more time to put on the weight. If he can add at least 20+ lbs in one year with the bisons, i can see a NHL team enticing him out of the CIS
