Well, I think the Habs are still pretty popular in Russia.
On one of my first days in Stavropol, I got into a taxi with my wife, and we started chatting with the driver. When he heard we were from Canada, he immediately put an Elvis CD on and started chanting 'Go Habs Go'. The Elvis we expected, but the Habs we didn't. Apparently he was from Murmansk, and says he will never forget the game of Russia vs Habs in '90. He was a huge Habs fan.
Another funny point. One member of the Jewish community here is named Alex Kovalev. Until I came around, he had no clue who the other Kovalev was.
