spectors - Gomez to be shopped

NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reports New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello might put centre Scott Gomez on the trade block during the upcoming draft weekend. The 2000 Calder winner is rumoured to have butted heads at times with head coach Scott Gomez, plus he's also due for salary arbitration this summer as a Group II free agent who'll seek a significant raise over the $1 million he made last season. The addition of college sensation Zach Parise and the possibility of a lockout also factors into it, and Everson suggests Lamoriello might package Gomez and his first round pick (22nd overall) to move up in the draft, or to deal for prospects or a bigger centre.

Spector's Note: Gomez's name has bounced around the rumour mill over the past two years but he's remained with the Devils. This time, however, salary arbitration could mark the end of his tenure with the club. The last Devils forward who got a significant raise via arbitration wound up shipped out of New Jersey (Petr Sykora).

This is the deal that Lowe should be all over. Gomez is young, fast, and was the 6th highest scoring centre in the league last year. The only centres who scored more than him were sakic, lang, richards, sundin, and thornton. He is an elite 1st line centre.

I would gladly trade smyth for gomez.

It seems that Lou wants picks and prospects. How about horcoff and our 14 th?

How about izzy and both 1st rounders?

Well there's the problem right there: he thinks he's the head coach already. I guess that Calder went to his head.

I was kinda wondering how he would fit here also when I saw that.

My biggest concern with getting Gomez is that he doesn't score. He has hit 70 pts twice and yet hasn't hit the 20 goal mark even once.

The Oilers definately need a talented center but a large part of that need is for a guy who will put the puck in the net.

ya, as great as I think he is, and yes, he would help the team alot - I'm not sure he's the kind of guy you go out and pay a high price to have to line up beside Hemsky for the future (although if you could get a guy like Evgeny Tunik on that line - look out.

I'd be all over that, but why would NJ? Henrich and Horacek are both essentially worthless, and, as much as I like Pisani, we all know he's not exactly worth a top line centre.

The Oiler with the closest trade value to Gomez IMO is Mike York.....

Would you even consider moving Yorkie for a piss poor package like that????

Pisani has scored almost as many goals as Gomez's max goal totals. Henrich will be a good 3rd line player who will never make it in Edmonton. Horacek would develop well in New Jersey's system.

would consider it?

A former first rounder, a player who almost has as many goals as Gomez, and a tall physical defenseman for Gomez who they're trying ot unload? I think NJ would bite. I don't think that's a piss poor package at all. it's a 3 for 1 deal. Everyone likes those kind of deals.

Not when it is a 3 questionable players for 1 solid player, not many teams like those deals. Horacek can barely make the Roadrunners so I doubt the Devils would want him. Henrich is still trying to prove himself and he is almost on the verge of becoming a bust and I'm sure the Devils have enough of those players on their Rosters. Pisani is a good 3rd/4th liner for the Oilers but I'm not sure he would even make the Devils current squad for a permanent spot on the team. So those 3 for Gomez who has put up 2 70+ point seasons won't ever happen.

I'm trying to learn to take that attitude with this character.

I for one have to agree with ouKast here - I think Henrich will become a solid NHL player someday, but not for Edmonton. From what I've seen of him live, he's got the tools to do the job - he just has never seemed to get a break.

Mike Everson is not a reliable writer. Ask MissionHockey. I belive he made some rediculous rumor, I forgot who but visit the Sabres board that involves Gomez aswell. This is where I learned hes not a reliable source.
