When I entertained the possibility that we might have Sundin, I figured Saku was going to center the third line. Now I just think that there's likely going to be some shuffling around for a little while (but hopefully not, because that usually indicates slumping). I'm sure Carbo will be inclined to put Lang and Kovalev together at some point if the offense hits a low period, in which case, the 2nd and 3rd lines are up in the air. Anyway, sorry -- what was the question again? I just tuned out of my own response.

I really expect Saku to feel rejuvinated and ready to go this year. Usually there is all this pressure and focus on him leading up to the start of the season. Expectations, opinions on move/non-moves by the GM, commenting on drops in performance, etc, etc. Almost like he was going into every preseason having already lost a pound of flesh.

This year he is coming off of a good season (personal production-wise), the Canadiens (despite a slightly disappointing post-season) are coming off of a good year, and there is a lot of optimism that things continue to get better, there are 2 other centres in town that can be relied on to carry some weight both offensively and defensively (so not everything is on HIS shoulders). And BG has addressed a few weaknesses (toughness, more playmaking from the wings, etc).

All in all, Saku will probably come into camp feeling 10 pounds lighter than usual, won't have to log all the minutes and shoulder all the on-ice responsibilities he has had to in the past, etc. He should be able to give it his all for a whole year without slowing down. I predict at WORST a slight drop in production due to not relying on him to be a workhorse minute-wise. At best, I could see him establishing yet another career high in points, if only by a few, due to having more talent and complimentary options around him.

I agree with your analysis. It will be interesting to see what Koivu can do under these circumstances, starting the year "10 lbs lighter" + not having to carry the team all year = less wear and tear + less fatigue = better results. And like you say, less TOI, but better linemates.

I'm looking formward to it, and I hope he is too. All those factors combined should mean we'll get a better return for him when we tlade him at the dreadline...

I hear it's pretty common for people who believe that Chipchura is above Lapierre in the depth chart to have no understanding of humour...
