Fleming resigns; to become head coach of Omsk

Quote:
Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that the organization has accepted the resignation of assistant coach Wayne Fleming.

Fleming will assume the head coach position with Omsk of the Russian Continental Hockey League.

“We have great respect for the work Wayne did with us and appreciate his contributions,” said Sutter. “We understand that the opportunity to be the head coach of a significant team such as this represents the very best opportunity for him and his career at this time.”

“I’m proud of my two seasons working as a member of the Flames coaching staff alongside very professional and successful hockey people,” said Fleming. “There is no question regarding the commitment of the Flames organization to winning the Stanley Cup.”

All the best to Fleming.

Interesting. Kinda dissapointing. Thought he had a window during the offseason to accept an offer and didn't take it so he could stay. But I definetly understand him wanting to be a head coach and I'm sure he got Sutter's ok to take the job.

Yeah, by the sounds of it, Darryl Sutter (and Ken King) was supportive of this move and gave him the OK to pursue this.

Jaromir Jagr could very well be the world's best-paid headhunter.

Earlier this week, the former NHL star, who's getting paid $25 million worth of rubles to play for Avangard Omsk in the Continental Hockey League (KHL) for the next two seasons, was making a recruiting phone call to Wayne Fleming. A very wary Wayne Fleming, as it turns out.

"I kind of said, 'Yeah, sure,' " admitted Fleming, "but then he started talking a little bit longer (and he realized the call was legit). I'm not sure how he got my name or number, I don't know how that happened."
