Hey guys: Just wanted to introduce myself and get a feel for what the Flames' message board is like. I've just moved out to Calgary from Toronto to take over the Flames' beat after covering the Leafs for two years.
The Leafs board is one of the busiest and I've already noticed that this one isn't quite as active. I'd appreciate any feedback from you guys as far as things you'd like to see improved, additional coverage you'd like to see or things that you like currently.
Please email me from the link on the main Calgary page. I try to answer every email and I have no problem dishing out some info on prospects throughout the season.
Welcome to the Flames' board, Scott!
As already mentioned, the board is rather quiet compared to the Leafs' board, nevertheless the discussions concerning rookies tend to be as controversial as those on the Leafs' board, so think twice about your evaluations of our prospects, in particular those of Backlund and Chucko, and reason your decisions wisely, if you don't want to spoil your chances with either side.
Apart from that, I am really looking forward to your articles and hope that we don't have to wait for our articles as long as in the recent past.
Moreover, I hope, that you take part in some of the discussions on this board.
And as far as my credentials, I covered the Sudbury Wolves for three seasons at The Sudbury Star, the Oshawa Generals for one, been writing for HF for two years now, and I currently write for the Airdrie Echo and freelance for magazines around the west, including ScoreGolf, and others that have nothing to do with sports.
I guess what I would like to see is simply more attention to detail paid to the Flames page in general.
For example the Flames page has been badly out-dated for over a year. It took all of last season for the link to the farm team to change from Omaha to the Quad Cities. Prospects such as Brad Cole have been completely ignored. Per Jonsson is a defenseman rather than a Center. It's hard to believe the mantra of "the #1 site for hockey prospects" when such glaring errors/omissions are taking place.
I'm not suggesting that it is Scott's responsibility to correct these problems. As the writer he is not responsible for updating the page, but if he can tap into those who are responsible and they are made aware of the problem it should be corrected.
I hope that Scott brings increased analysis to the development of the prospects within the Calgary organization. Flames fans on this site and CP are generally aware of the prospects and their statistical achievements. A breakdown of the top 20 should entail more than merely a statistical breakdown of a season.
There is an endless amount of information Flames fans would be interested in regarding Calgary prospects. What is the role of the prospect on his junior team? If a guy such as Armstrong is not putting up points in Plymouth is it because he sucks or is it because he is stuck behind two older skilled prospects and must wait his turn to be thrust into a top 6 role? What do the Flames think of him (talking to Tod Button or Duane Sutter hopefully)? What do they project him to be? What are his weaknesses/strengths?
From Scott's mini-bio it seems like he is well versed in hockey and has previous experience with journalism. That is warmly received here (at least by me) after the lack of quality pieces regarding the Flames. I hope that Scott can contribute more than a draft preview, a draft review, and a top 20 list. With a number of Flames prospects (5) playing in the WHL I am optimistic that Scott will be able to talk with a few of them and provide additional insight to these players.
Welcome Scott. I look forward to reading your work.
Hope you don't take offence, but what exactly is your role as writer? Will you be taking in games? Both flames and Quad City? Do you talk to the players regularly or at all?
While most of HF's content is geared towards players playing in the AHL, ECHL, CHL and euros, it is hard to see the players play on a consistent basis. I will follow the WHL prospects closely, probably seeing them play 10-15 times a year. I was in contact with many scouts the player personnel guys in Toronto and I will do the same here. Features when AHL guys get called up to the Flames, CHL features and standard comments about other guys I'm not in contact with personally from the Sutters should be the norm. I may not use direct quotes all the time because information may not come solely from Flames' scouts, but other teams' guys who watch them play on a consistent basis. They won't go on the record if its not their guy. So if it's written, it's something that has been said to me with an understanding that it won't be attached to a name.
Also, as far as the player pages and prospect profiles, HF staff is currently undertaking a major project of updating all of the information and providing more comprehensive scouting reports. I will have a hand in this but since it is such a major project I can't speculate as to when the Flames stuff will finish up.
