how is Shanny not a team player? he wanted to take a paycut of $4 million to stay, did you see Sean Avery do that? What about Jagr? nope neither. I understand not wanting him, but to say something so ludicrous and retarded just blows my mind.

I'm not as down on Shanny as some, but is his willingness to take a pay cut to stay with the Rangers an act of good faith or a matter of circumstance?

Obviously in Avery and Jagr's case there was a market for them.

And there isnt for Shanny. It's been reported that the Flyers AND the Blues are after him, but he told both teams he only wants to play for the Rangers.

I think there's a market for Shanny that's far greater than what he could possibly get from the Rangers.

Gary Roberts got $2 million, and if you think Shanahan looks old and worn out...

Gary Roberts still hits people. He is a physical presence, Shanny is not.

Shanny will get his 20 or so goals, but I can't help but wonder if someone else in his spot would get the same.

Pretty sure Roberts signed early in the off-season when teams actually had cap room. Plus, who's to say another team would have paid $2 mil for Roberts...i know i certainly wouldn't.

Can someone explain why we need Shanny on this team? His lack of speed will not fit in with the team. He doesnt play physical and wont go to the front of the net. I can't say he showed much chemistry with anyone last year that would warrant another contract.

At this point, I think the team would be much better off going into the season without him and seeing how things look. If it's determined that they need more of a vet presence, you can either sign him or trade for someone else. They have the depth to make some trades, so why not keep the cap space and your options open.

Shanahan is better at every other aspect of the game, and Steve Webb would be a lot cheaper.

someone else? sure. on this roster? no.

teams have cap room now. I'm pretty sure Vancouver has a standing offer of $10 million per for Sundin.

I'll bet when the Rangers finally tell Shanny no, he'll sign somewhere for ~$3M

How is Shanny not a team player? He accepted a "pay cut" in his salary last season to earn about 5 mill, some of which has now been carried over to this season. He's looking out for himself, lets not get all lovey dovey with this "Shanny's a team player" stuff.

Promnite...

what's more valuable - a hit a game for 38 games and three goals or a hit every three games and 23 goals? If Shanny and Roberts switched spots, I'd guarantee Roberts doesn't get 23 goals. Perhaps 10, but not 23. So many value hitting a bit too much.

As for Shanny taking a 'discount' to play with the Rangers...who knows about that one. He took a hometown discount in year two and his pay went from $4MM to $5.3MM (including bonuses for showing up)after scoring 11 less goals than he did in the prior season for which he earned the $4MM contract (oh, and those 11 less goals were on more shots; less games, but more shots).

Shanahan's refusal to accept the tryout agreement was in the original news story by the Post.

if anything tonights game should prove just how far this team has come in getting faster, and more creative offensively.

Just say NO to Shanny.

Well if TSN is correct, Shanny said NO to Sather.

Shanahan said no to a tryout--although the offer is still open. There's been no report of Sather telling Shanahan the Rangers will not sign him this season.

I agree. I actually really like Shanny, but the gas just ran out on him. He can still score, problem is, he's just too slow. Playing him on the second line last year was a mistake too, especially when he played with Gomez.

Let's take him just for shootouts! Too bad his contract is absolutely not worth it.

I realize that quote is accurate Gong but I feel the Rangers are already being pressed to make hard decisions now we are going to dump one of these guys working hard in camp for Shanny to come in? At this point I would rather Petr Nedved, he would have EARNED what he gets if he continues his play.

Go to the Blues Shanny! They could actually use you

Shanahan needs to be a part of this training camp in order for the Rangers to truly discern whether or not he can be of any value to the team in a bottom six role.

Further, the leadership impact of a guy like Shanny - even in the short term - is beneficial to the Rangers and the wealth of young players they have vying for positions.

Hopefully he accepts.

If people think he's done and doesn't bring anything to the team, so be it (I can agree to disagree with that.)

But some of the shots at him being a team player and "forcing" the Rangers hand are a bit much.
