I call it the 'Jean-Coutu' approach to drafting

You know the slogan for our pharmacy in Quebec... "where you find everything, even a friend"

Well that sure seems to be the Habs' motto:

- picking 3 guys from the Rockets, who they got to know while scouting Lambert drafted the year b4

- picking a player that played with Kastitsyn, which our scouts got know while scouting our former 1st pick

- picking O`Byrne's D partner at Cornell, which we got to know scouting O'Byrne of course

This is becoming a theme... does any other team draft this way?

Obviously advantage is drafting players they really know since they followed them all year, because the scouts were there to follow an existing Habs prospect.

But it would explain why we tend to let bigger names, and sometimes better players, slip by inexplicably.

In the same vein:

Were any or all of Savard, Timmins, and Pierre Gauthier in Ottawa when Bonk was drafted?

It would be another case of going after a player they are familiar with.

Savard had done the same with Traverse, Juneau, Dackell when he was GM.

I know what you mean. I have noticed this trend by our scouting staff too. Not that it's a bad thing anyways, IMO. By the way, Alex Dulac-Lemelin and Loc Lacasse are also teammates. Both have played for Baie-Comeau in the Q last season.

There is also Greg Stewart who is a teammate of Mark Flood (03 draft) both are playing for the Peterborough Petes, which is also Daniel Ryder's team

Niiiice catch. Well, it seems like a bizarre approach to scouting, but the evidence is overwhelming. (But then... why not Seitsonen instead of Wyman, eh? Doh. Must have been the overpowering lure of the Taconite.)

Their draft picks look f-cked up imo. I'm not bashing them, but it looks bizarre nonetheless.
