So the question is, who makes the squad?

Forwards:

Jason Arnott, Radek Bonk, J.P. Dumont, Martin Erat, Vernon Fiddler, Patric Hornqvist, David Legwand, Scott Nichol, Rich Peverley, Jerred Smithson, Jordin Tootoo are all locks IMO.

Sullivan will obviously be on the IR and perhaps Ortmeyer too?

That leaves Grant, Gratton, Jones, O'Reilly, Pihlstrom, Ward battling it out for the final spots. I doubt O'Reilly and Ward make the squad and only one of Grant or Gratton. That leaves Pihlstrom and Jones fighting it out.

Defense:
Greg de Vries, Dan Hamhuis, Kevin Klein, Ville Koistinen, Alexander Sulzer, Ryan Suter, Shea Weber and Greg Zanon

I think Sulzer is the odd man out here and we carry 7 defensemen.

Goaltending:
Dan Ellis, and Pekka Rinne are locks.

MacIntyre will be sent to Milwaukee.

For the forwards I don't think Peverley is a lock.

I could be mistaken, but doesn't Peverley have to clear waivers if sent down?

Nah, I just liked typing "the poor get rich" along with my "we can't afford to lose, we're on a budget". It's about time to go back to my goalie in the latte avatar anyway.

Having said that, I think Peverly is on par with Fiddler already and has more upside so I'd trade Fiddler for a 19th round pick and call it a day. I'd be tempted to throw in Smithson and let Joel Ward have his spot but I guess the risk the PK suffers is too great.

I am starting to think Jones is more and more likely to start with the Ads... I see Tootoo, Peverly, Bonk or Fiddler starting in our top 6.

Dumont - Arnott - Hornqvist
Erat - Legwand - Tootoo
Smithson - Nichol - Pihlstrom
Fiddler - Bonk - Peverley
Gratton - Ryan

Hamhuis - DeVries
Suter - Weber
Zanon - Koistinen
Klein

Ellis
Rinne

IR: Sullivan and Ortmeyer

Milwaukee: Jones, Grant, Ward, O'Reilly, Sulzer, MacIntyre

Those first three lines are actually what they ran in practice today. Personally, I'd feel more comfortable picking up Ouellet off waivers from TB and putting him on the 2nd line wing and create the nastiest line in all of hockey with Nichol centering Tootoo and Pihlstrom.

Michael Ryan actually played pretty well today in both drills and controlled scrimmage situations. I think he is really pushing for a contract to be honest.

Peverley IMO is a lock for the roster. He is subject to waivers and is playing very well thus far in camp. He improved with each of his recalls last season and came up with some big plays late in the season. IMO, Fiddler is in his last season here. Peverley is his replacement and brings with him more offensive talent.

Jones does not appear ready. There are times he looks like a deer in headlights and although his work ethic is there, he definitely should not be rushed and should be sent to Milwaukee for seasoning to start the year.

I'm giving the enforcer edge to Gratton over Grant. I really don't think we will keep two enforcers this season, sorry fight fans...

Personally, really don't like the experiment with Tootoo as a top-six winger...think he would be better served in a two-way role on that aggressive third line and Peverley would be a much better fit than anyone else.

Again, gotta be considering giving Michael Ryan a contract out of camp and also need to seriously ponder the availability of Ouellet.

Agreed.

SLake, what do you think about Joel Ward's showing thus far?

Smart player, noticed him last season watching a Houston Aeros game on TV. He didn't have a single shift in that game where his name wasn't called at least once by the announcers. Not afraid to get his nose dirty, Ward is not a fighter, but plays all-out every shift and will make things happen at both ends of the ice when the opportunity presents.

He is a player that I think doesn't stand out in any situation individually, but rather makes his living making his linemates better and working with them to maximize their potential.

Does all the small things...spent about 10 minutes after practice working on puckhandling (really struggled, was visibily disgusted with himself).

Ward will start in Milwaukee, but will be expected to provide depth for the organization and step in and make a contribution if/when he is recalled.

Tootoo on the 2nd line is Trotz's tactic each year around this time. It will fail. Trotz will try to bring this idea back around January as well. It will again fail.

Ah well, at least I know the cyclical nature and the outcomes heading into the season. Actually getting my hopes up for a Tootoo to Tucker like transition is fruitless.

What do you mean only one enforcer??? We need 2 or 3 so that at least we will be entertained while not winning many games!

I think Gratton has an edge over Grant just because in the last game Grant and some CBJ were kind of shoving each other trying to fight. A linesman broke them up but Grant ended up being out of position, and out of the whole play really, and it led to a good scoring chance for CBus.

This article from NP.com leads me to believe that Peverly has the inside track on Ryan Jones right now.

I've been attending most of the practices thus far, but have missed all of the exhibition games...from my standpoint though, Peverley is far and away outperforming Jones at this point. Not even truly close to be honest.

Jones appears to have a bright future ahead, but he needs some seasoning in Milwaukee first before stepping onto the ice for the Preds during the regular season.

This move allows Ryan to try to catch on with another team before rosters are set next week. Personally, I thought he was in position to win a contract out of camp, but definitely saw the acquistion of Tarnasky as the end for Ryan.

Thanks for the observations on Jones, SLake. I suspect he will be in Milwuakee if he truly doesn't look better than Peverly at this point.
