Victoria Cup: New York Rangers and Metallurg Magnitogorsk - 10/1/08 - 1:45pm EST- MSG

and

It's the fight for this prize below......

Quote:
“I don’t know if you can sit here and compare it to an NHL playoff game, but I can tell you that you can’t compare it to an NHL preseason game either,” Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky said. “Where it fits in between I’m not sure, but I know it’ll be an intense game and both teams will be fighting to win. You can’t expect anything less than that.”
Quote:
“The best in the world happens at the end of the season,” Rangers coach Tom Renney said, “and maybe one day we can find out for sure with the European champion and the NHL champion playing.”
Quote:
“From what we have heard and everything that is going on in the city, they’re taking the game pretty seriously and we have to come with the same attitude or we’re going to get beat,” Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. “It means a lot to us, too. We don’t want to come over here and get embarrassed. We want to come here and win and play really well doing it. It’s definitely not an ordinary exhibition game.”
It would count as pre-season game #8, but it's much more then that.

* The last time an NHL team played a team from Russia was in 1991 when Dynamo Moscow beat the Quebec Nordiques, 4-1, in Quebec City.

* The last time the Rangers played exhibition games in Europe was Sept. 11-12, 1993 in London against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nine months later they won the Stanley Cup.

* The Rangers were the first NHL team to play against a European club when they met CSKA Moscow on Dec. 28, 1975 at Madison Square Garden. CSKA Moscow won, 7-3.

* According to the IIHF, the NHL leads the all-time series against European club teams with a 70-65-11 record. The NHL teams have scored 532 goals and allowed 508.

Line-ups will be presented by local blogs, and anyone can post them once they have been released.

This game will be televised on NHL network tomorrow. I have it DVR'd right now. I am a little worried it won't be on though because NHL network also said the Ranger game vs whoever the hell you guys played today was going to be on as well, it wasn't and they had some old time hockey on instead.

So for those of you who have NHL network go look at the listings - this game should be awesome.

anyway, we'll get to see former Rangers draft pick Jan Marek in this game, he is by far Metallurg's best player.

I remember Marek. I was always high on him...but he never seemed to make the jump to North America.

Here are the current statistics for Metallurg this season:

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/csl.php?tid=5027

It says 07-08 but it is really this year.

Avangard Omsk beat these guys 6-0 a few weeks ago.
Of course, Omsk has Jagr which we don't...

NJD - that made me laugh, alot. Thanks man.

The game should be fun but I spoke to a few people and they said we shouldn't expect the same atmosphere as yesterday, which kind of sucks.

Also, there is a game before the game between Swiss legends (featuring Slovak Peter Stastny for some reason) against Russian legends including former Ranger Valery Kamensky. Should be a joke but we'll see. I'm heading over to the rink in a few minutes.

Let's go Rangers!!!!!!!!

yeppp....

Yeppp that's why the devs weren't even considered for it.

The NHL was looking for classy players that represent the league.

Don't want them going over there and then have Mary Brodeur not shaking people's hands after the game.

I certainly can't say that I am rooting for the rangers in this one for obvious reasons

but i do have a question about the Victoria Cup.

If you guys win, do you bring the cup home with you and wait for another team to beat you to become "Victoria Cup Chanpions" or whatever the name would be? or is it more like Lord Stanley where teams just compete for it every year?

anyways, should be an interesting game

the game between the Rangers and SC Bern was @ Noon-2:30 and was simulcasted off MSG W/ the NHL Network, because it had been mentioned and was listed if u had that network.

I believe Metallurg & SC Bern were playing for this Victoria Cup.
