Gomez isn't a first line center in my book. Outside of his rookie year, he has never scored more than 14 goals nor has he ever reached anything close to ppg figures. It takes a fair bit more than recording 56 assists to be labelled a first line center in the NHL.. He also doesn't has other attributes to make up for it.. Very solid playmaking 2nd line center, but let's not get carried away.. 2nd half MVP?? Most points doesn't make him an MVP..

Oates was never much of a goal scorer but he was fine centre. He had a good year back in the days of high scoring hockey but he's 3 assist per goal player. Gomez might not be as elite as Oates was and but like him he'll be an assists specialist. If you put talent around him he'll help bring out the best in that talent. Gomez is a capable #1 centre, not elite but capable. If the Hawks got him and made him they would have a great 1-2 with Ruutu. They would be set for 10 years. That + a player like Green is a huge benefit for the club long term.

I don't see why the Devils would do it.

Playmakers aren't paid to score goals, genius. They're paid to set plays up. And what exactly does it take to be a 1st line center? If 56 assists isn't enough, there are no first line centers in the league, as no other center had more than 54 other than Gomez.

He may not be a 1st line center on seven or eight teams in the league. But I'm willing to say that he's a 1st line center on every other one. He's twenty four and will probably be making $3-4M for what he does. Nice.

So why in the blue hell would New Jersey benefit from trading their second best offensive talent for some eighteen year old?!

Just stop, people. Please. I know this is a prospect site. But when the Hawks could add a player who could outplay every player in their organization for some unproven talent, they'd do it.

If NJ is actually looking to move Gomez, it seems like a relatively fair proposal to me. Chicago should probably add a later pick though.

He could outplay anyone (!) on our team??? Ask Lou if he wouldn't rather have Ruutu.
