Don't be surprised if hes sent to Phoenix, or Hell if somehow Tampa or NYR make enough salary cap room magically a deal can be struck. But Phoenix or Nashville wouldn't surprise me. Nashville is bleeding out from the last Radulov wound, so they will be crap for Forwards, except maybe Arnott. Savard for a Defender (they are loaded with them) isn't too far from a possible block buster. Also Phoenix managed to get Olli in that steal trade, I think Savard would help cultivate their youngsters, and create a massive threat. (Olli, Hanzal, Turris, Mueller, Boedker, Tikhonov, Savard) that looks like a pretty scary line to play against. Maybe not as scary this year, but in the next 2-3 years, definitely.

Washington wouldn't send Backstrom for Savard. The differnce between what we'd project for them this year wouldn't negate the overall game and potential of Backstrom. I'd bet a sheep that they wouldn't make that deal. Boston wouldn't even ask.

In spite of his great offensive upsides, I wouldn't touch Savard. He doesn't know what his own zone looks like and there have been several reports over the years about his attitude.

In purely hockey terms, I think it is very possible that when you consdier their entire games, Backstrom may be a better player this year, but that is subject to opinion.

The problem is I think Martin is pretty much handcuffed here.
I'm no fan of Savard, I don't think he's the type of player you, well you know, win things with. But if it's between losing Jay for nothing or getting a 90-point center...
That being said, if the Bruins must make the deal now, it probably won't happen. Florida would be wise to wait until the trade deadline and milk the situation for all it's worth.
Who knows though? Who'd have thought Thornton could be had for so little while under contract or that Forsberg would garner so much as a rental? I'm historically horrible at predicting player value in a trade.

I think it depends on what the Panthers organization thinks their chances of re-signing J-Bo next year are. I have serious doubts that he'll want to re-sign with them, so I'm thinking they'll have to trade him if they don't want to lose him for nothing.
They are also pretty loaded at D, and although J-Bo is a top notch player, they need offence and Marc Savard would provide that.
My question would then be, "Would Martin be able to get more than Savard in return for a UFA-bound J-Bo?" I'm not so sure.

From the Boston Herald article, it seems like the reason for Savard being on the trade market would be due to cap issues... and Ryder's $4 million are definitely contributors to those issues.
