I think Gorges will be a solid top 4 this year. He was damned close last year.
Also, I'd like to see Valentenko crack the line-up this year.
Gorges is a solid #5-6 but he is not the definition of the mobile puck moving guy(a la Derek Moris) descibed earlier.
If the Habs look like a cup contender, maybe you trade for a UFA d-man at the deadline. Signing one is too expensive, Rozival cost 5 mil a year and that was prob with a home town discount, Redden had a crappy year and he got 6.5 for like 6 years.
I doubt management is seriously sweating over who's going to be #4 - by February Ryan O'Byrne may well have passed Gorges / Boullion (I see Bou as the team's #4 right now).
If no one currently steps up, Bob may be in the market for a rent-a-player to put us over the top on the blueline. There's next to no way anyone will be added permanently considering our prospect depth.
Am I the only one who feels we need one more solid defenseman instead of another offensive player?
If you believed the opposite, you might have a chance at being the only one, but as it stands, I'll file your opinion under the "Mainstream" heading...
But betcha we pick up a solid rental Dman for the playoffs
Exactly... for now let O'Byrne develop through about 60 games before the trade deadline. If at that point we need another D we can trade for one.

Quit saying he needs to be Canadian..... Detroit won the cup last year and they were a Euro based time. Are you telling me that Kronvall wouldn't be good enough for you?? This is a really prejudiced opinion and shows lack of knowledge in the way the NHL has changed recently.

Yeah, we sure don't need more of those heartless, non-Canadian guys like Komi and Markov and Hamrlik... we need guys who actually care about winning the Cup.

Yeah Komisarek isn't gritty and doesn't want the cup cause he's not canadian..... Hamrlik isn't tough enough cause he's not Canadian.... Markov, we should trade that Russian tomorrow. I mean look at the Wings defence... nik lidstrom and nicklas kronwall were so ****** last year... good thing the wings had the ghost of steve yzerman on the ice or they never would've won the cup.
I really think that our only question mark this season is about our number 4 defensemen... I think that O'Byrne as the potentiel to do it, but this year, i'm not so sure about it.
Right now, the plan is to stick with OByrne. If he progresses like he should, then we have our 4th D, if not, we can look for a D at the deadline. Anyways, with the team we have he's worth the gamble.

I have a feeling that if the Habs are doing well at the trade deadline, that BG will make a push for another top 4 Dman. The only way I don't see this happening is if the Habs have a shot at an elite sniper (but when does that ever happen...) The Habs have both the cap room and the depth in prospects to pull this off.
Vancouver is looking for some offense, that's a given. I like Bieksa's style of play always been a fan. If it were to come up that a deal would be possible I would surely approach it.
Latendresse(could play with Bonnie & Clyde)
D'ags(gives them another offensive minded player, D'ags is a very solid player IMO)
1st rounder
and a Choice of either Dandenault, Boullion, or O'bryne
for Bieksa and 2nd
I'm not sure Vancouver would accept that deal, but we all know Gainey isn't shy to pull the trigger if it makes his team better overall.
I think as soon as O'Byrne starts playing with Hamrlik he is going to be just fine as our 4th D.
He will be fine.
He played well with him last year. I think he's been nervous in the pre season because hes so conftorble playing with Hammer that now he's nervous not having hammer behind him.
