That's very odd since we just signed him this summer. Claimed off of waivers perhaps? Maybe he was cut by the Hawks today and it hasn't been announced.

You are very right that it is odd. Dallas is tight against the cap and already has 7 NHL defensemen. Zubov and Boucher are both injured, but Boucher just started skating again. Either Zubov's injury is worse than they are letting on or Dallas is trading one of the Top 7 defensemen if this is true.

They incorrectly mention Tampa Bay, but the indication is that Janik was claimed off waivers.

Quote:
The Stars sent a bit of a message to their defensemen today as they picked up veteran D-man Doug Janik on waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Janik, 28, is 6-2, 209 and known as a solid defensive defenseman. Brad Richards played with him in Tampa Bay, and had good things to say about him.

The acquisition of Janik means there's a very good chance Dan Jancevski, Garrett Stafford and Maxime Fortunas all start the year in the minors. Philippe Boucher skated today and looks good, so he should be ready for the season opener Oct. 10.

If Sergei Zubov (hip) is the only defenseman injured, that means Dallas will have:

Stephane Robidas
Philippe Boucher
Trevor Daley
Nicklas Grossman
Matt Niskanen
Mark Fistric
Doug Janik

I guess they really didn't want to use Jancevski or Vishnevskiy...? Or is Boucher finally on the way out?

Boucher has been hurt and Fistric can use more minutes in AHL . Ivan can use AHL time. Janik is likely just more experienced than Jancevski. Move of Doug over Fistric saves 200k as well

I think Heika from DMN, link provided above by IB, may have the right idea. Fistric could start the season with the Stars while Zubov is injured, expected to miss the first week to 5 weeks of the regular season. Then Fistric could go down to the AHL, he won't have to clear waivers, and Dallas saves just under $300,000 on their cap with Janik as a 7th defenseman.

If Boucher was leaving, surely it wouldn't be Doug Janik in this place.

haha no kidding.. the Hawks were already in Dallas for a game against them. He quite literally just walks into the other dressing room.

If he was claimed off waivers, wouldn't he have been placed on waivers yesterday. Do you think he would still travel with them?

Sorta sucks!

I liked Janik when he played with Lightning and would have liked to see him at least as our #6 or 7 guy.

I will say this in praise of Janik: He knows how to fight. Now he does not do it often but the few times I can remember him throwing down in Tampa he always issued a beat down. Not a heavyweight by any means but he sure can throw.

Dallas should have dressed him tonight then, because it was a sixty-minute brawl.
