Note: I will skip stuff said about Prague and Czech...it was not related to Rangers.
I - interviewer
S - Sather
Obviously Sather was not in the mood for interview.
Sather: "Interview?Why?About what?"
I: Why?Rangers are playing in Czech.
S: Did you talk with our PR guy?
I: Nope. I just see you there standing, so i'm trying my luck
S: So guy from PR is not doing his job? Should i fire him?
I: Thats not necessary. I just want to ask you few questions.
S: Okay lets try it.
I: Since lockout, Rangers were called Czech Rangers sometimes. Did this era end?
s: Everything is changing, Players are getting old, roster is changing, situation is affected by salary cap.
Unfortunately we were not able to keep Jaromir Jagr, because we could not compete with money he is getting in Russia.
For sure i'm missing him right now, he is great guy.
I: Did you speak with him since he started playing in Russia?
s: Our assistent Mike Pelino was in Omsk to see three or four games. Jaromir called Tom Renney week ago , they talked for about half an hour.
He is still with contact with Rangers, we have still great relationship.
I: So you are close friend with JJ.
S: Sure. I really appreciate him a lot, he is a great guy.
I: Is there less laughter in Rangers locker room?
S: Maybe, hard to say. I really miss him. Even on ice. I know he is a great player. Unfortunately it ended like this.
I: Because JJ was insisting on long term contract?
S: Well, it was not easy. JJ is not young anymore. Simply we can't compete with offer from Russia. He chose his way.
I: He did? You couldn't do more?
S: Look, i will say it like this: i know that JJ is still working hard, scoring goals. But there is no way around, our team is getting younger.
I: To keep or to not to keep JJ. Was it the hardest thing you had to do as manager?
S: One of the hardest. Sure, it was complicated. But we did what we had to do. And JJ chose his way as well. No one can blame anyone.
I: But when JJ left, Rangers did not look good. Atleast according to exhibition games, Rangers did not play well.
S: It's nothing we should be afraid of. In preseason games team is getting together. We are not playing with optimal roster all the time.
Our schedule was because of Europe trip quite hectic, it wasn't easy. From 40 players we had to cut lot of players, it's not easy process.
I: One of them was Petr Nedved. Were you surprised to see him playing well?
S: I admit, he played really good in pre-season. He came in a great shape.
S: Again, we had to decide. If to go with young player who is something over twenty or if to go with thirty-seven year old veteran.
We went with younger one. That's how it goes. Petr worked hard in training camp, he played good. But hockey changed a lot.
S: Speed and toughness, thats what matters. We have an option to keep young guys who are playing this way. And they are 22 years old for example.
And if they are good same as thirty-seven year old veteran, you have to go with younger one.
I: This is exactly the biggest change for Rangers after Jagr-era right? More speed, more youth.
S: Exactly. And we are not the only one going with this style, it's whole NHL. You can't even do it in different way.
Speed? That's the rule number one for success. We are living in time, when NHL has really strict rules about hooking or holding.
Hockey is more than ever sport for young guys.
I: In what category is current Rangers team better than last year? In speed?
S: Hard to say. We didn't play single NHL game. When we do, we will be smarter.
And do you know what comes to my mind?
I: Have no idea.
S: You told me it will be just few questions. Lets end it okay? It's quite a long story now!
Well that is the case with him 9 out of 10 times. I have never before seen such a smug looking man than Glen Sather. There are things I love about him as a GM and there are things I really really don't like.
I have nothing to dislike with glen's answers to these questions. Jagr was a good citizen while he was here. He was the captain and the team was developed around him. The rangers made the playoffs and grew every year he was on the team... sather and everyone was sad to see him go, but it was best for everyone. As for Nedved... Korpikoski beat him out for the 3rd line center spot. As sather says a 22 year old or 36 year old. I think we all know the right answer.
It was so easy to throw the blame on sather over his first few years as gm... but i have to admit, the dark ages are getting brighter and brighter.
I have to rely on good people like yourself for info on Hartford and prospects and i stay up to watch streams in the early hours of the morning but i wouldnt have it any other way, well unless i could move to New York and get a season ticket
Regarding Sather i can only go by interviews i read and stuff people on here post but lets just say i dont get a good vibe from him or from whats posted about him.
