Rate your defense

I'm interrested in your opinions on your defense. Please rate your defenders from 0 (won't make the NHL this season) to 10 (best defenseman in NHL etc). Also point out some strengths and weaknesses individually and as a unit. Right or Left position/both on ice is interresting too. Possible line-up is a bonus.

Campbell
Seabrook
Barker
Sopel
Keith
Wisniewski
Walker
Hjarlmarsson
Janik
Johnson
Hendry

Campbell - 8
Seabrook - 7.5
Barker - 6.5
Sopel - 6
Keith - 8
Wisniewski - 6 (out until around December otherwise he'd be in the lineup)
Walker - 5
Hjarlmarsson - 6
Janik - 4
Johnson - 4
Hendry - 6

Seabrook - Keith
Campbell - Sopel (Savard has said he wants to put Sopel with Campbell to start with but most fans would rather see Barker and Campbell)
Barker - Hendry/Hjalmarsson
Walker

I was starting to do the rankings but noticed mine were eerily similar to Zim's.

I would rate Sopel/Hendry a bit better, and possibly Walker and Janik because they're two solid defensive defensemen... not very flashy but get the job done.

"Solid" is the last word I would use to describe Matt Walker, unless I was talking about his skull.

I want to see the pairings like this:

Campbell Seabrook
Keith Barker
Hendry Sopel

Janik
Walker

The top two pairs have a small guy paired with a big guy, a defensively questionable guy paired with a rock solid guy and the bottom pair is a stone cold shutdown pair.

Wish has to be more of a 7 - 7.5... When he plays he's often the best D-man on ice in terms of effort and willingness. Reminds me of a Keith Ballard.

Surprised Cam Barker has rather low numbers. What's his chances of having a breakthrough this season?

I definitely like those pairings. I might almost switch Keith with Seabrook, but I can see why you put Keith on the second pairing, things look more balanced.

A quick question: What's the deal with Hjalmarsson? I was under the impression that maybe he'd get a shot with the big club this year. Are both Janik and Walker ahead of him on the development curve or will he just be in Rockford to keep getting quality ice time instead of sitting in the press box?

That is the main idea. If Hjalmarsson can't crack the top-6 then Chicago don't want him sat in the press box when he could be getting 1st pairing minutes in the AHL.

That makes sense. I look forward to watching him when he makes the club eventually. I'm also very curious about Hendry. I'll be keeping an eye on him this year, assuming he makes the top-6.

I'd actually flip Barker and Sopel. I think Hendy is nice insurance as a nice stay-at-home defenseman opposite Barker who is likely to make some mistakes.

Campbell Seabrook
Keith Sopel
Hendry Barker

If 10 means better than 100% of the league, and 9 means better than 90% etc...

Campbell 9.5
Seabrook 8
Barker 5
Sopel 6
Keith 9.5
Wisniewski 6
Walker 0
Hjarlmarsson 3.5
Janik 0
Johnson 0
Hendry 4

What are the odds Seabrook sees first unit PP time for a good part of this season?

Pretty good, I think. There's also been some experimentation with a four forward 1-3-1 unit with Campbell at the point that has been incredibly explosive but I can't see them running that consistently.

Does Seabrook play the point when he's in there? I haven't had much chance to watch him, but I'm totally pscyhed about the new WGN tv deal this winter. Will be great to see the Hawks on free TV for a change in Chicago.

I think I'd take Hjalmer over Hendry. Hendry and Catfish are just too slow together.
