No offense, but I would veto that trade if it was in my league. Your getting taken to the cleaners unless there are 9 goalie stats to 3 offensive stats. Sykora for Ellis is in your favor. Boyes for Ellis is more fair, and you could make a very good argument that Boyes is more valuable (43 goals last year). Hossa should have been on the table for any of the top goaltenders outside of probably Brodeur in a non-keeper league, and in a keeper league, he is as valuable as any goaltender.
I like Boyes more.
My forward core is very strong my Cs are great my Lws are very good too. G is the only weakness. In my league there are 4 goalie stats and 3 min games played so if Im gonna go with just Gerber Im gonna lose every week in the G stats. Other teams have something like Toskala/Theodore and Budaj/Nabokov or Giguere/Thomas or Luongo/Lehtonen. I feel with Gerber my goaltending is by far the worst in my League.

Your analysis is right (save for on Boyes). You have to get a goalie. That said, Hossa could have landed you Luongo, Kipprusoff, Nabokov, Lundqvist, Fleury.......instead, you get Ellis. Bad deal for you. You dealt a first round pick for a 7th round pick.

So, what do our lines look like at this point, people?

We are left with Forwards (16): Jason Arnott, Radek Bonk, J.P. Dumont, Martin Erat, Vernon Fiddler, Josh Gratton, Patric Hornqvist, Ryan Jones, David Legwand, Scott Nichol, Rich Peverley, Antti Pihlstrom, Jerred Smithson, Nick Tarnasky, Jordin Tootoo and Joel Ward.
Defensemen (7): Greg de Vries, Dan Hamhuis, Kevin Klein, Ville Koistinen, Ryan Suter, Shea Weber and Greg Zanon.
Goaltenders (2): Dan Ellis and Pekka Rinne.

First line: HAD (Horny - great hockey name, Arnott, Dumont)
Second line: Erat, Legwand, Tootoo?
Third line:?
Fourth line:?
Pihlstrom likely to be sent down, because he is not waiver eligible. Grant already waived to go down, Sully is done and Ortmeyer not
ready to go.

What kind of lines do we end up with?
How do you guys feel about this team? Seems to me like it is gritty, defense-oriented and goaltending dependent.

Tootoo has earned that second line spot on opening night, IMO. He's played really well all preseason and I see no reason why he shouldn't get a shot.

Jones has not looked NHL-ready to me at all.

Our opening night lines will probably look something like this:

Dumont-Arnott-Hörnqvist
Erat-Legwand-Tootoo
Pihlström-Nichol-Ward/Smithson
Fiddler-Bonk-Smithson/Ward

Weber-Suter
Hamhuis-De Vries
Koistinen-Zanon

Ellis
Rinne

Scratches: Klein, Peverley
IR: Tarnasky (hand), Sullivan (back), Ortmeyer (knee)

What do you guys expect from Tootoo this year? Will he actually stick on the second line? It appears as if he had a pretty good camp.

Tootoo has a few things he needs to work on. In no particular order:
  • Develop a wrist shot and USE IT.
  • Learn the difference between a pass and a shot. (he's done some work here already)
  • Understand that the puck is NOT a live grenade.

If he can do those three things, he'll become a much better player in a very short order. I could see him getting 15+ goals if he can do that and stay healthy. Until then, he's just an out-of-place bottom six forward.

brass sure does have alot of faith in Tarnasky. I thought Gratton was decent in the small amount of time that I saw him. Way better than Kesley Wilson and Tristan Grant anyway.

Speculation from Tennessean -

Gratton (yes I've read the other links) and Pihlstrom to Milwaukee:

http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....RTS02/81007010

I'd be very disappointed to see Pihlstrom sent down as I think he's had another great preseason. This might be another case of send down the guy who wouldn't face waivers move.

This makes me sick...when someone who deserves to be in the show gets cut...over someone with a one-way contract.

To me...this signals the people who are signing the players don't know wtf they're doing!!!

How about that, another brilliant management decision.

Is ward making the team? Sure seems like it. Mabye they are going to give ward a tryout so to speak with the big club and if he works out, he stays ,if he doesnt they send him down and bring on philstrom. You certainly can't say ward hasnt earned his shot

I disagree. Pihlstrom hasn't been that much better than others to justify the risk. If Pihlstrom is kept up and Ward is put on waiver and claimed, who do you call up when one of the guys blows out a knee the first week of the season? Someone that has already proven themselves to be further down the depth chart.

Tie (or near tie) goes to keeping the maximum number of assets.

It's all about balancing depth and ability to win currently. Pekka Rinne was on par with Dan Ellis last year in camp, no matter what the Preds' brass says. I made the same argument that you are now making but I was wrong. By sending him back, we avoided the risk of losing Ellis without materially harming the team. Now it should pay dividends.

yeah I did. and it wasn't that bad. right now we're trusting our enforcer duties to a man who has never in his career played that roll.
