The Checkers have announced that Troy Mann will be joining the team as an associate coach this season. Mann spent the last two seasons as coach and director of hockey operations for the Columbia Inferno (ECHL), which voluntarily suspended operations for this season while a new arena is being built.

Two other Checkers have been invited to AHL training camps this year.

Foward Maxime Boisclair will be attending the Iowa Chops' training camp.

Also, defenseman James Jernberg, who will be in Checkers' camp as a tryout, has been invited to the Houston Aeros' training camp. The 27 year-old Minnesota native measures in at 6'4" and 230lbs. After playing four years at U. of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (NCAA Div III), Jernberg went overseas to Europe. Last year, he suited up for Titannit Kotka in the Mestis, or Finnish 1st Division, where he totaled 7G8A15Pts and 145PIM in 37 games. This year will be his third pro season.

The Checkers have announced they have acquired Ken Scuderi, D from the Augusta Lynx for future considerations. The 28 year-old defenseman has played his entire pro career in Augusta after graduating from Clarkson University. Last year, the fourth-year pro totaled 3 goals, 15 assists, and 28 penalty minutes in 53 games. He was +10 on a team where no other regular blueliner had a plus rating.

The Checkers have announce their 17th and 18th players signed for the upcoming season.

Jeff Miles, F is a 28 year-old right wing who's spent most of the past three seasons with the on-hiatus Columbia Inferno (ECHL). Last year, the fifth-year player had his best season in pro hockey, totaling 39G47A76Pts in 68 games to lead the Inferno in scoring. Miles is a product of the U. of Vermont hockey program and a former Blackhawks draft pick. Over his pro career, he has also played 46 games in the AHL for six different teams. He counts as a veteran signing under ECHL rules. Teams are allowed four veterans. The Checkers currently have two signed.

Ryan Murphy, F returns for another season with the Checkers. Last year, the 25 year-old played 37 games in Charlotte, notching 8 goals and 20 helpers. He also played a total of 19 games in the AHL, split between Hartford and Peoria, but managed to total only one assist. This year will be the former Kings' draft pick 4th pro-season.

The Checkers have extended training camp tryouts to two more players. The first of these is defenseman Lyon Messier. The other is goalie Maxime Daigneault, who split time last season between Cincinatti (ECHL) and Milwaukee (AHL).

The Checkers played their first and only preseason game of the season on Friday night at their practice facility. the Xtreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, NC. Someone forgot to tell their opponent for the evening, the Mississippi Seawolves, that they would be featured as sacrificial lambs.

The Checkers stomped all over the Wolves 9-1, outshooting them 40 to 23. Ryan Hillier potted two assists and led the team with seven shots on goal. Zaborsky and Busto contributed assists. Skokan and Urquhart did not play. Mark Messier was in attendance and watched his son Lyon, a tryout player, get an assist.
