Flyers' Parent needs shoulder surgery

The news was not what the Flyers wanted.

But it is unavoidable.

Rookie defenseman Ryan Parent's right shoulder has not improved and he will need surgery to repair a torn labrum suffered in a preseason game last month against the New York Islanders in London, Ontario.

According to general manager Paul Holmgren, Parent will miss the first 12 to 14 weeks of the season.

"He'll miss significant time. He's going to need surgery on his right shoulder. He has a torn labrum," Holmgren said. "We tried to do the conservative route with a little rest and some rehab and it didn't work and it's not going in the right direction. We decided today to go the aggressive route." *

Does mean that maybe the Pens will lose Kris Letang in the playoffs? Karma does seem to be having fun here...

My friends, this is one of the reasons that Holmgren picked up 17 defensemen in the offseason.

Yes, its a great move by Holmgren. This really sucks though, it takes so long for Dmen to develop, and loosing almost a whole year of development time just sucks. I was really looking for a big year from Parent this year defensively.

Well for right now we're still fine. And I think Guenin/Syvret/Ramholt/Bartulis would be fine call-ups. Dont get me wrong this sucks a lot, but more so for Parent's development than this year's team

Timonen-Coburn
Vaananen-Eminger
Jones-Kukkonen

Parent is out 3-4 months now so we need sort of a permanent replacement, not just a short term fill-in. I think this will mean that Sbisa gets the first shot. He'll get his 9 game "try-out" and if he looks solid I think we'll keep him even though everything else screams that a pick that late in the draft isn't ready as and 18-year old. If he doesn't make a statement then he'll be sent back to juniors and we'll look to one of Kukkonen, Syvret, Ratchuk (unlikely), Bartilus, Guenin or else a trade.

I think that Sbisa will be given a real shot to prove he should stay now while before I thought he'd just get a 9 game look while Parent and Jones nursed injuries.

Jesus Christ, normally the injury ninja waits till we are doing really good during the season before he takes players out.

Parent says yeah.

Point being, it can't be that bad.
After reading that, at least I have someone to blame for this.

I don't think it's going to be as bad as others on here might make it out to be. Fact of the matter is that Sbisa played himself into the top six, so regardless of age, there's talent there. Add to it, Vaananen and Eminger have played well, and Kukkonen is always reliable, so there are four guys right there plus we've got Coburn and Timonen. Right now, if I'm Stevens, I'm looking at separating Coburn and Timonen though and would only play them together on the Penalty Kill and the last two minutes of a game.

Seriously, the D is not as bad as it's being made out to be.

Sbisa might be great early but is his body ready for the wear and tear of an 82 game schedule. I know he is probally in good shape, but this is a high school senior playing with full grown men night in and night out. His body has not filled out yet and I do not want what happened to Eminger in Washington to happen to him here, which was being pushed into the NHL to early

Quote about possible acquisition...

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren spent much of Wednesday trying to land a veteran defenseman who can replace injured rookie Ryan Parent, who will miss the opening three months of the season with a labrum tear in his right shoulder.

"We've got a lot of calls out," Holmgren said. "But nothing to report. Not yet anyway."

A shame we didn't pick up Schneider when he was on waivers. He would have patched the hole quite nicely.

I don't either, nor do I pretend to. More just the name I guess. Would have been good on the PP, veteran leadership, cup experience...and when Parent got healthy, shop him at the deadline back to the Western Conference.

It all sounds good to me, but I'm not a GM.

Had we taken him off waivers I think we would be responsible for half of his salary (2.813M) but I'm not sure of that. For that price he would have been a good replacement.

Not true. We would have been on the hook for the full amount. We would have only had half of the cap it if it were RE-ENTRY waivers...meaning he was sent to the AHL, and then attempted to be brought back to the NHL. You must go on waivers both ways.

A Flyers example...we waived Gauthier last year and if he were claimed they would have had the entire 3.25 (or whatever it was). Then he was stashed in the AHL. We couldn't bring him back up because then he would have had to go through waivers again, and probably would have been claimed at 1.75. Then we would have been stuck paying 1.75 for a player on another team.
