Summer 09 and our cap room situation

Ufa With Their Current Cap Hit
Tanguay 5.25m
Koivu 4.75m
Kovalev 4.50m
Lang 4.00m
Begin 1.57m
Kostopoulos 0.90m
Bouillon 1.875m
Dandenault 1.725m
Komisarek 1.70m
Brisebois 0.75m

Rfa With Their Current Cap Hit
Higgins 1.7m
Plekanec 1.6m
Chipchura 0.943m
Latendresse 0.85m

Leaving Us With Almost 34 Millions To Spend Is The Cap Stays The Same Next Year

So Here's Who I Think Will Be Resign And What I Think Will Be Their Salary

Kovalev 5.0m
Komisarek 7.0m
Tanguay 4.5m
Koivu 3.5m
Higgins 3.5m
Plekanec 4.25m
Chipchura 1.5m
Latendresse 1.5m

So After Theses Signature Of A Value Of 30 Millions We Still Have About 3.5 Millions To Spend

So Even If We Go Win The Cup At The End Of Season We Could Still Have A Shot Next Year.
Also I Think Koivu & Higgins Might Not Be Back Next Year Depending On How This Season Goes And If We Have A Shot A Big Ufa Next Year

Habs 2009-10

Andrei (3 250 000) - Plekanec (4 000 000) - Kovalev (6 000 000)
Higgins (3 250 000) - Koivu (4 750 000) - Sergei (817 000)
Pacioretty (875 000) - Maxwell (850 000) - Latendresse (1 000 000)
Laraque (1 500 000) - Chipchura (1 000 000) - Lapierre (688 000)
Forward 13 (1 000 000)

Markov (5 750 000) - Komisarek (5 500 000)
Hamrlik (5 500 000) - O'Byrne (942 000)
Valentenko (850 000) - Gorges (1 100 000)
Defenseman 7 (1 000 000)

Price (2 200 000)
Halak (775 000)

Total: 52 597 000$

It sucks for Tanguay, but I think Gainey has to choose beetween him and Kovy. Maybe if the cap goes up... Thoughts?

i agree with this. cap or no cap, there is simply not enough room for him if we want some of the kids to play on the top 3 lines. unless lang leaves and they convert sergei into a center between latendresse and pacioretty...
then there's room...
but what about a d'agostini? he's not a 4th liner like chips/laps and stewart

btw it looks like weber we'll be the 6th or 7th dman next year rotating with valentenko

I also like Tangs over Kovy, but I don't know... As a RW... I'm anxious to see what he has.

I don't see a good spot for D'Agos... We have to see Lats progression. Let's be honest, we have to keep some guys from the place... Honestly I don't really care... But they don't.

No way Komisarek makes 5 500 000 next year...

If the cap goes up to let's say 58 000 000, we can sign one more player. Tanguay could stay.

If the cap goes down, then it's a blessing in disguise. We have so many UFAs this year that we'll have several opportunities... unlike other teams like let's say the Flyers, who are stuck with long term deals.

Here's my take

A. Kostitsyn (3,250) - Plekanec (4) - Kovalev (5,650)
Higgins (3,5) - Koivu (4,5) - Tanguay (5,450)
Latendresse (1,25) - Maxwell (,850) - S. Kostitsyn (0,817)
Laraque (1,5) - Lapierre (,688) - Begin (,800)

Markov (5,8) - Komisarek (4,7)
Hamrlik (5,5) - O'Byrne (,942)
Weber (,850) - Gorges (1,1)

Price (2,2)
Halak (,775)

F13: 600 000
D7: 700 000

Total : 55 422 000

Looks great, at least IMO.

I don't know for Komo... IMO, he's more important than Hammer. Probably our next captain, a great shutdown D and a monster... The kind of player that every GM wants in his team. I don't mind paying him big bucks, he's a big piece of the puzzle. Anyway, I wrote 5.5M$, but I think we'll get him at a lower price, since he loves playing here and it's almost his team.

I like Beige, but as our forward 13. I also think, that Pacioretty will probably be in Montreal next year, if not this season.

I love Weber, but I prefer Valentenko with his defensive mind set and his physical presence.

Without Markov, Komisarek is an OK stay-at-home D-Man... nothing outstanding. He can't play offensive, and he doesn't help the transition help really much...

Hamrlik can just play it every sauce... Stay-At-Home, puck-moving, puck-possession... he's a stud.

Komisarek still has many things to prove, and when Hammer was hurt last year, we saw how important Roman is to this team.

How to evaluate our 10 free agents...

At the end of this season, the Habs will have 10 free agents either UFA or RFA which include

Koivu
Kovalev
Lang
Tanguay
Plek
Higgins
Komi
Lats

While some players might take a paycut to stay in MTL (Tanguay) which players should be resigned and for how much?

2009-10 Habs - cap hit/cap hit guess

Price 2,200,000.00
Halak 775,000.00
Markov 5,750,000.00
Hamrlik 5,500,000.00
Komisarek 5,000,000.00
Gorges 1,100,000.00
O'Byrne 941,666.00
Weber 875,000.00
Valentenko 850,000.00 (could be a cheaper 7th D though)
Plekanec 4,500,000.00
Koivu 5,000,000.00
Chipchura 1,000,000.00
Lapierre 687,500.00
A. Kostitsyn 3,250,000.00
Tanguay 5,500,000.00
Higgins 3,700,000.00
Latendresse 1,250,000.00

Kovalev 5,500,000.00
S. Kostitsyn 816,667.00
D'Agostini 600,000.00 (waiver eligible...)
Stewart 500,000.00
(waiver eligible...)
Laraque 1,500,000.00
Pacioretty 875,000.00

Total = 57,670,833.00 - 23 players counted

bold = UFAs
italics = RFAs

It can fit if the cap goes up by 2 M to 58.5M ish (you want a 1M cushion). I also projected high on a lot of those contracts and it's a full 23 man roster...There's also possibly Maxwell's 850 K cap hit to fit in there (substract one of the wingers I guess) if he's Lang's replacement.

I don't agree. I mean, Komo is a better player because of Marky, but Marky is also a better player with Komo. Markov wasn't that good before playing with Komisarek. They're great as a unit. Komo isn't just an OK stay-at-home IMO, he's good. He's one of the best shot blocking D in the league, and he hits like no one. Sure, he can't play an offensive game, but still, you need that kind of player in your team.

Hammer puck-moving? Early in his carrer...maybe,now? Not that much. Plays a safe game.

I'm watching the Koivu returns game and it got me thinking. 3 years at $3M per year and Montreal donates $6M to his foundation. Can they do that or is it considered against league rules for the cap?

If you guys think Latendresse is going to take "only" $1,250,000 you might as well start trying to figure out what other teams will give in an offer sheet and decide whether you're going to match it or not.

I have a feeling the habs will take Latendresse willingness to stay a habs as a factor to offer him 1.250m$.

I doubt Latendresse would accept an offer sheet unless its ridiculous like 3m$ and over.

If any offer sheet is over 3m$ then you can bet the habs will take the pick and promote one of our youngster (Pacioretty, D'agostini, etc)

IMO

montreal will keep one of koivu,kovalev,tanguay...
if we sign Tanguay or Kovalev ... sergei get bump to the 3rd line.
if we sign koivu he takes the mystery player place.

Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Kostitsyn
Latendresse - (mystery player) - Pacioretty
Higgins - Chipchura - D'agostini
Stewart - Lapierre - Laraque

Markov - Komisarek
Hamrlik - O'byrne
Gorges - Weber

Price
Halak

its my projected lineup the mystery player is hard to figure .. it could be koivu, maxwell or anybody else from UFA,RFA and trade.

Our weakness at center should affect us big time next year(damn you timmins )

What do you expect for Plekanec in a new contract?

he will be RFA after this season ...

what salary and length of contract we can expect?

will there be any effort by Gainey to sign him? or we can expect any trade?

what do you think ...

There has been some talk that Gainey is working on a long term contract but with Gainey it's hard to get good info before hand. I think he will get a deal done at some point before June as a guess, maybe 5-6 years, Gainey hasn't been giving out contracts that long but I also think he will make exceptions when he sees fit to. Impossible to say the amount, hope it's not too big of a cap hit but he's a player that we need to keep imo.

I'm not worried one bit about Latendresse, I'm sure Gainey will offer him fair value before he hits RFA status, if not oh well.

We'll see.

I am assuming short-term deal on that one...unless he has a major breakout (25 goal/50 point style) I don't see him having that much leverage in contract talks considering he would be 4 years away from UFA status.

Ok so now explain how are we gonna re-sign S.Kostitsyn, C.Price if we re-sign Koivu, Tanguay, Kovalev...
unless they take paycuts I doubt it would be possible!

Kovalev and Koivu would be one year deals.... At that point we see what the cap is at and maybe one of them retires with their cup rings....
