Mike Gillis will be considered a great GM by the end of this season.

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the club has signed defenceman Alex Edler to a four-year contract extension through the 2012-13 NHL season. Edler enters his third season as a Vancouver Canuck.

Horrible length. He'll be a UFA as soon as possible.

Wicked news!
I'm guessing 3-3.5 mil per year.

If you haven't noticed our defensemen have a tendency to hang around for under-valued contracts.

Assuming it will be for between $2-3M because it doesn't buy out any years of free agency. Keeps him in a Canuck uniform for the next 5 seasons. Great job Gillis!

I don't think Dave's bosses would be very happy that he's still negotiating contracts for the Canucks.

Don't really like the years, but depending on the mosey this could be a great deal.

That's a lot of uncertainty to bank on there.

If you treat your players right, there is no reason to believe that Edler won't sign an extension in 3 years.

Whatever. The Canucks never have problems re-signing the free agents they want to keep.
If you're worried about losing core guys like to unrestricted free agency, your franchise is probably a disaster already (see Florida; Minnesota).

Look at Ohlund, Salo, and Bieksa. Like I said, if we treat Edler right, there is no reason to believe that he won't resign with the Canucks. We don't have a Gaborik situation here

I don't think it's a huge deal to sign a guy to a contract that takes him to UFA. Either you take him to the year before and if he wants out he goes to arbitration and gets out the next season or you just end up spreading out the additional cap hit of the UFA years you buy out now rather than absorbing them in the future and he ends up a UFA at the end of his contract anyway.

Not really. Our organization has no problem whatsoever keeping defensemen (especially Scandinavian defensemen). They absolutely love it here.
Ohlund will be re-upped this year as well. Bank on it.
