Technically Bieksa got his contract after one year.

Is that your guess, or is that what it's worth?

Yep, didn't buy out any years of unrestricted free agency so I think thats bang on.

That said, I wouldn't be to unhappy if it was for more.

yeah, by the time he signed with the canucks he didnt has the proven record like Salo or Ohlund too, but yet he is the highest paid defenseman.

I'm going to say 4 years 11 million.

Basically the Canucks were going to face an offer sheet for him for about $2.5 million, and they get to lock him up long term this way.

So, does this increase or decrease trade speculation on Edler? He should have a lot of value after this deal.

2-3 million range for sure. Not more than that. His payday will be massive on the next one if he contines to develop.

A massive payday in 5 years?

Let's worry about that then.

This deal makes a lot more sense if you think Gillis is actively shopping Bieksa. This would allow Gillis to deal Bieksa knowing Edler is signed long-term.

Increase trade value... Decrase speculation.

If we were to deal Bieksa, unless it was for another defenseman, I'd be worried. Especially after moving Krajicek, we'd be losing a lot of our back-end puck mobility.

I'll throw my hat into the ring and guess the extension is worth 2.75 million per, 11 million total over 4 years.

I don't think Gillis is looking to move anyone for at least 15-20 games - see how his lines are working out, and then trying to rotate Wellwood into the lineup.

Of course, that's unless a great deal comes along. But most of those deals won't come until some teams feel like they need to shake their rosters up, which also won't come until about the 20 game mark.

If Bieksa can build off of his game last night, I doubt he moves (although his value would return to where it once was).

He was his usual nasty, solid, minute-eating self.

I agree. Don't even think about touching that blueline until you absolutely have to. Bieksa does look like he's returning to form, which is GREAT news. Not even going to mention Ohlund - that giant beast.

$12 million / 4 = $3 million per (my guess).

This is great news. Great.

I thought Bieksa still looks WAY too nonchalant with the puck. He seems a little TOO relaxed and almost careless. I think he needs to pick up his intensity.

thats how he always looks. The key to him is winning those one-on-one puck battles down low in the defensive zone.

I dunno. He didn't look in tip-top form yet, but he's getting there. 25 minutes of icetime, +5, was getting up in opponents faces at the blueline. I think we'll see the old Juice this season.

He has always looked that way. When he was our best defender, it was interpreted as confidence. Last year, it was viewed as carelessness. I don't think it's an intensity issue.
