Maybe Gillis told him that he's planning on trading him?

This article in Aftonbladet says 87 million Kronor, which is $12 million US. Don't know if it's reliable.

So $3/yr? I'm happy with that. But no more than $3M YET. He'll definately be worth $5M in 5 years.

I used the currency converter here to convert the 87 million Kronor to USD, and it works out to $12.17 million, so I'm guessing $12 million makes the most sense, though it could be more.

12 million over 4 years is very manageable... excellent timing by Gillis with this signing.

what? most of the reports said 3 mil per....now 3.25?
thats kinda odd.

Anyhow, great deal. Tough to give him 4 years tho....but if he plays like Ohlund....we'll love him...he'll love us....and will re-sign before he hits UFA.

Edler will be a steal in 3-4 years for 3-3.25 mil.

Hmm...and people called me crazy when I initially pegged Edler in the 3.5M range in other threads...

Pauser was right

$3.25 mil per year is awesome value for Edler; glad he's locked up! Only a few more Swedes to go on the re-signing front...we've GOT to re-sign Burrows in a hurry as well!

It's starting to look like we're going to use up our cap space on player extensions alone.

Edler, Ohlund, the Sedins, Burrows, that's about 10 million++ right there, isn't it?

The cap hit for extensions doesn't apply to the current year. So Edler's cap hit for this year will still only be $550K

Pretty damn close.

And we'll only have that much space if the cap holds even or doesn't go down due to all the financial catastrophe. A lot of teams are going to be in cap hell soon.

Doesn't Kesler need to be resigned soon as well?

EDIT: Please note I'm talking about next season here.

uh, correct me if I'm wrong but Edler's conract wont kick in until next season. He's still making just over $500K this season.

We have about $30M committed to 10 players next year.

Assuming the following are re-signed:

Sedins (x2) ~ $11M
Ohlund? $3.5M
Burrows $1.5M
Backup G $0.6M

that brings us to $46.6M committed to 15 players (with the key spots locked up). Assuming Grabner and Hodgson are able to make the team, we're in good shape.

And given his play, assuming he's at the 40-50 point level, I would anticipate it to be a 4 year deal worth $16M....but thats very preliminary and more of a shot out of left field than anything.

Well that's a relief.

If Burrows keeps playing like this, we're not going to get him for 1.5...

Still, we're stuck with a 1 year rental deal then. Can't throw someone like Sundin anywhere near 20 million anymore.

Gillis is gonna need to give several players due raises in the next few years. For example the Sedins and Burrows deserve raises next year. Then in the few years after that, guys like Raymond, Kesler, and Hansen (as long as they keep improving) will need bigger paychecks. This is why I'm wary of going out and signing a big name player like Gaborik. While it would be awesome to have him here, the Canucks finally look like they have a solid young core forming and it would be nice to be able to keep the bunch. Just look at Pittsburgh's situation. The Canucks are not even comparable to the Penguins as far as talent goes but the principle is the same; they formed an amazing core and before Shiro could say Stanley Cup he had to let go of some key parts because of the cap. I really look forward to seeing how Gillis handles the salary cap in the coming years and how well he manages the core of this team.
