Ottawa - Columbus

No this is not a Pascal Leclaire for *insert horrible value package here* thread

Quote:
To Columbus: Alexander Nikulin, OTT 2nd Round Pick in 2009

To Ottawa: Marc Methot, Alexandre Picard
Reasoning behind proposal

Nikulin will never see time in Ottawa this year due to our amazing depth, but I feel he would have a better shot in Columbus. Binghampton is needing another defenseman and Methot could be a valuable contributer to the team, and he is from Ottawa as a bonus. I think Picard needs a change of scenery to help his career, helps out Bingo as well.

Columbus gets a solid 3rd liner in Nikulin, he is very skilled but has the attitude that he doesn't need to work to get to where he needs to go. I also think a change of scenery could only benefit him. And a 2nd in a deep draft, it is expendable due to Ottawa having two 1sts this year.

Is it fair? What does Columbus and Ottawa fans think about this proposal?

Being a fan of both teams, I don't see Columbus doing this. Methot, from what i've heard, is liked by the coaching staff. I could be wrong though.

Why not just Nikulin for Picard?

Nikulin (and I guess, Schubert and a pick) are the new Ryder, Halak and a 2nd.

Nikulin and Schubert with a 2nd evens anything out because as we all know a 2nd round pick balances every trade.

Nah, the team doens't really need Nikulin. Methot's saddled in as our 8th defensemen, and Picard's become a call up depth player. I bet Nikulin could easilly replace that roll for Picard, but still, Nikulin just isn't...necessary.

I believe that is the point of these type of trades, Columbus gives up a depth guy who could become a regular NHLer but won't on the Jackets, for a depth player from Ottawa who could become a regular NHLer but won't on the Sens. It leave each team at least as good as they are now but with more upside than previously.

I dunno much about Picard. Is he better than Picard?

How would their jerseys look? They have the same name!

You'd probably have to get middle initials involved.

As for the trade... meh. Maybe a week or so earlier when we were agonizing over Rome vs. Methot, but now that Rome's cleared waivers there's really not much motivation.

I doubt it would happen because Nikulin doesn't sound like the type of player Hitch/Howson would go out and acquire. I'd be intrigued, but I don't think CBJ management would.

That said, an extra 2nd round pick would be a very handy asset to have.

I like both Methot and Picard, who, its worth noting looks and is playing better than he ever has before (not that that bar was high), but the CBJ is stocked with Methot (OK, Rome, Clitsome) and Picard (Pineault, Sestito, Dorsett) type guys.

To put it another way ... I doubt Methot and Picard are the difference between the CBJ being a playoff team and not being a playoff team, but a 2nd round pick as an added trade asset could make a big difference in playoffs or not.

That's exactly the type of player that Ken Hitchcock loves: a highly skilled floater.

**** yes. Imagine the fun the announcers would have.

However, I'm starting to be intrigued by this Plekhanov gentleman. I'll have to read up on him.

That's what I was going to say. Howson effectively shipped anyone out with any questions about their attitude or work ethic, so I don't think he'd make a trade like this.

When he makes the NHL his shot will be the envy of the league.

1) Why do you think that Nikulin is a "solid 3rd liner"?

2) Why do think that "he doesn't need to work to get to where he needs to go."?
He improved his strength and conditioning numbers this season and went to the AHL all last season to improve his game for the NHL. There just aren't any spots for him in Ottawa and there won't be any next season either... so he thinks it best to move on to another organization (or go back home otherwise), because it's now clear that he's wasting his time in Ottawa.

The guy trained over the summer with Gonchar and Malkin so if he doesn't work hard enough neither do they because they did the same things.
