Precisely.....I also think there is a huge chance that the cap will drop next season. If that is the case then players lose a lot of their leverage in negotiations. It is in their best interest to get things done before the grim reality sets in.

At this point we have no idea how much the contract is for.....If Kopitar is making less than $5 million/year he is getting hosed and the portrayal of AEG as cheap will continue.

I can remember Dean making comments during the offseason along the lines of, "O'Sullivan is just one contract out of twnety-five that we're dealing with." I remember thinking that it was absolutely ridiculous to make a statement like that when one of your premier restricted free agents isn't signed ... WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU BE WORKING ON!? ... Well I feel like a fool.

This is absolutely great news and I am legitimately excited to see what the terms are. Given the AEG budget this contract has to be back loaded yes? I would assume first year has to be more than Brown and O'Sullivan. Maybe starting at 4 million then increasing towards six over five or six years. The idea of having Kopitar locked up and not dealing with a Cammalleri or O'Sullivan issue next offseason is just about the best news I've had all week.

Brief hijack: If this puts Dean up against the AEG cap for the season does that seriously impare Johnson from being signed until next offseason?

That makes good sense, they probably stand to make out better financially right now for sure. I am just a little shocked about my misspelling of the word surprised, not once but twice

Excellent news for the Kings. Is it going to be a 7 X 7 or an 8 X 8?

I'll go with 8 X 8. We'll see what shakes out though.

That AEG cash budget is per season. Kopitar's new contract won't kick in until next season (I think...I'm assuming Kopitar is on the last leg of his rookie contract).

Contract extensions do not go into effect until next season they are not part of this season's budget.

wow. I'm impressed, but I also do credit the sky falling economy. Still, Dean has garnished a few points in my book.

Now if he realizes that the iron is hot and ready to strike soon, and starts working towards those ends. minimally by this off-season, I will get some hope back.

If you are suggesting that the Kings would offer Kopitar $8 million/year on an 8 year deal then you are nuts.

I wonder what the Lombardi haters are thinking right about now....
I'm thinking the contracts given to Brown, O'Sullivan and this extension have been great moves by Lomnbardi. Has he won me over with 3 good moves and a really bad hockey team? No. I don't embrace mediocrity or losing. He will win me over if he hands a Kings jersey with 09 on the back to either Tavares or Hedman. Then and only then will the re-build gain the momentum it truly needs. Now on to the season.

Who cares what anyone else thinks is cheap.... it's what the player who AGREED to the contract thinks and as you and I agree, there are a lot of other factors right now.

As far as potential UFA perceptions of the Kings goes, don't think for a minute a guy won't come to LA because he thinks they're "cheap" if they have:
a) the best young core in the NHL (check)
b) the most cap space (check)
c) a proven winning coach who doesn't crack a whip in the traditional sense (check)
d) arguably the best city-living/lifestyle in the whole league. (check)

Plus, like I said, this country is on the precipice of going into the worst financial tailspin it's been in in 80 years. It's very possible $4.25 mil will be huge money in two years. However my guess is, he's signed for more than that. We'll see. no matter what it is, he agreed to it, and I doubt if it's shorter than a 3-year deal.

Can one of you CAP experts confirm this? I could've swore that players salaries (and obviously the CAP) were tied to league revenues which means if the CAP goes down because revenues are down, so would the players' contracts relative the decrease in the CAP.
