no.. you might be thinking of escrow fund where the a portion of salary is withheld to make sure the projected revenues are hit.. however the contracts themselves are secure...

No. I don't embrace mediocrity or losing. He will win me over if he hands a Kings jersey with 09 on the back to either Tavares or Hedman. Then and only then will the re-build gain the momentum it truly needs. Now on to the season.
I disagree. I think the system is stacked enough as is to provide a solid defensive core for the next several years. Hickey was one of the last cuts during the preseason and imagine next season he will be vying for a legitimate roster spot in the 09-10 season. Teubert will likely follow a similar career path to Hickey and make a serious run at a roster spot in the 10-11 season. By my count that is five extremely solid defensive players. At that point assuming all five turn out to be "just" above average and not one turning into a stud you can go out and get one. Dean has always said that free agency can be done to supplement your team, you just can't build with it.

As for your larger point about disliking Dean over poor seasons no one thinks that the Kings are going to turn everything around this year but a marked improvement would be a step in the right direction. If the Kings are fighting for a playoff spot come April how would you feel then?

EDIT: Completely unrelated to this post but ... I just saw seven years ... HOLY CRAP THAT IS AWESOME.

The contracts cannot be decreased....but the players do have to pay a certain percentage of their contracts into an escrow account. If the league does not meet certain revenue goals then the players lose some or all of that money. So in a sense their salary is reduced based on a lower cap.

Seven years. Awesome news. I'm guessing around a $6 million average.

I'll guess a low of 4.8 with a high of 5.6.

And while 4.8 may *seem* low, he'd still be the highest-paid King.

This is some good news to wake up to. Seven years is plenty of time to get that cup.

I agree......but....if he did sign for that cheap it would help to sign guys like Johnson, Hickey, Doughty and Bernier in the future....so maybe Dean tried to make him focus on that?

That is what I was thinking of. What would happen if a team was just about capped out for two years in a row and during the offseason between those years the CAP drops below what they have under contract? Do they have to make moves to get under that figure? Or does the CAP number on the contract drop?

True.

And don't forget --- the more a player devalues himself, the greater his chances are at becoming team captain.

Let's say a team goes into the off season with $50 million in contracts and the new cap drops to $48 million.....before the next season starts the GM would have to shed at least $2 million in salary before the start of the next season. There is no contract reduction.

Wow good to know... I know that is unlikely to happen but some teams could be in a real predicament this summer if the CAP does drop.

*lol*? I don't think Anze Kopitar (or his manager) is that stupid.

You think so? It's a 7 year deal, I bet it's substantial dollar signs.
