The Kings seem to be dedicated to building from the inside, which is smart, and that includes signing your key RFAs to reasonable contracts at high yields. If they can get Johnson locked up for 5 years at $3.5 million and he gives you above average play for two years and Bouwmeester level play for the final three of that contract then look at how much money has been saved there to sign other key aspects of the defense that are going to need their money as well. Hickey, Doughty, and Tuebert aren't going to play for free.
absolutely however it depends hugely on how Doughty develops in the next 2 years... Our forwards are way ahead of our D and tending so if we don't have large progression our forward window will be gone by the time the D is ready...

Well hey, you guys just locked up the most important piece of the puzzle for 8 years and one franchise forward with a tremendous defense is a recipe for a pretty darn good hockey club. Secondary scoring can be found in the secondary market, IMO. Picks and prospects can be translated into that much needed complimentary set of players but as long as you have Brown, Kopitar, and that defense and what it projects to be then the Kings are going to be alright down the line. Now they just have to figure out if Bernier is going to be ready in time to take this team where it needs to be in the next two or three years. If not then a stop gap is going to be high on the list of priorities.

Great signing for LA. Kopitar is something special and I would LOVE to have him on my team anyday.

Good time to sign him. He's shown enough to warrant a long-term deal.

Just a gut feel here, but I don't see him making more than double what Dustin Brown will make. I would not be surprised if this came in at or around an average of $5M per year.

It could happen considering how bad Lombardi rips off young players

If that's the case, I may crap my pants. That would be excellent.

"...team policy...terms not disclosed"

Isn't this retarded or what? I'm so tired of this bs. We'll get the numbers later today or during the upcoming week anyway, why the wait? What's the purpose of this?

The rest of the Pacific just threw something. If the terms aren't too outlandish the Kings made a great deal.

Given the timing, I hope its a good to reasonable deal for the Kings. The way Lombardi made Sully sweat it out, it would seem logical that the only reason why Kopitar signed an extension this early is because Lombardi got the number to work under the Kings long-term plan.

$6.8 cap hit is enough but they're paying for the length and the UFA years.

This is the kind of player you want to lock up long term and you have to pay to do it.

I guess its a fair deal for Kopitar. Though, if those were the number I would have thought that this could wait until later on in the season. But if Kopitar was to go into RFA, the offer sheet for him probably would have been similar to Vanek's (if not higher).
