Flyers trade for Andrew Alberts

Flyers Acquire Andrew Alberts

http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app/?serv...ticleid=386366

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have acquired 6’5”, 220-pound defenseman Andrew Alberts from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward Ned Lukacevic and a conditional pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.

"Andrew is a big, competitive defenseman and he skates well,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “He will bring experience and depth to our team."

Alberts, 27, appeared in 35 regular season games for the Bruins last season, recording two assists and 39 penalty minutes. He was also scoreless in two playoff games for Boston. He missed 47 games due to injury with post-concussion symptoms following a hit in the game at Philadelphia on November 26.

Like I kept saying, that's all you can expect this time of year. Top 4 defensemen are not available 2 games into the season.

Hope Alby catches on with the Flyers. He didn't get a good start in Boston with three coaches in his first three seasons. He doesn't fit Julien's system and this was just a salary dump by the B's. It's not fair to say that Holmgren fleeced Chia because it clears cap space for Boston to make another move.

Alberts is a very physical guy and that's it. He was good defensively under Sullivan and Lewis, but didn't get Julien's system. He definitely won't bring any offense to the Flyers.

Andrew Alberts Specs (from a Bruins observer)

Hey guys, Bruins fan here...

Just thought we could share some info on the two players that were dealt for one another.

Alberts is a big boy that was brought along to be that solid stay-home defenseman ala Sean O'Donnel. Only bigger and a more fluid skater. Alberts has really gone downhill though over the last year or so after his injury (thanks Hartnel!). He's been a liability defensively and made a lot of mistakes, in turn being replaced by Shane Hnidy.

However, he is still young and still has the potential. I'd imagine Alberts could benefit from a new scene and the Flyers are obviously thinking the same. Hope he does well (against every other team then the B's)...I know he has a big fan following on the Bruins board.

So what's the deal with Ned Lukacevic? I saw he spent time in the ECHL. Maybe dealing Alberts was just a salary dump for the Bruins. Anything you guys can share?

I think he actually was playing pretty well for Boston last year and then got concussion symptoms or something like that. Not going to score any points, decent stay at home guy, I wouldn't expect anything more than 3rd pairing.

EDIT: Haha I forgot that was Hartnell, should be fun times.

We got Lukacevic from LA, kind of a nothing prospect I think, but looked okay at prospect camp when I saw him.

Not a bad trade.. We did not give up much. I do not think this trade will help tough.

Hopefully Homer flips someone for a draft pick after Parent and Jones come back.

Does this mean Sbisa is off the jrs ???
I think he only makes 1.2 mill, so that is good

Alberts is just a short term player for the Flyers. Sbisa is going to be sent down to minors, and when Jones or Parent get healthy either Alberts or Kukkonen are out the door.

I think they keep him up the full 9 games. Still, we needed another body back there until Jones gets back.

I understand we are limited, but doesnt this give us the same issue as last year??? No one that can move the puck?

I assume Sbisa will be sent back after 9 so that means you have Vaananen, Alberts, Kukkonen who have little to no puck skills....

I think (and hope) that at this point, the primary concern was making sure Sbisa gets back to junior. Plus, with the way our injuries have been going, we'll probably be seeing Syvret sooner rather than later.

We gave up almost nothing for something. At worst, think of it as a three-way trade were we dumped the white elephant that is Denis Gauthier and still ended up with an NHL player (even if it's going to cost another draft pick).

We'll see how he works out, it's a 4th if we let him walk, 3rd if we re-sign him. Sounds like he just needed to get out of Boston and not just because of the hit. Bruins fans seem to think it just wasn't working out with Julien.

It's not out of the question he makes it in town, gets on the ice for warmups, but I wouldn't expect him to play. Maybe tomorrow, and don't feed Sbisa to the wolves.
