One of the best possible moves we could've done. Alberts is a fantastic player.

A stopgap move for a 3rd pairing defenseman when two of your top 7 are out is a headscratcher?

We didn't give up a lot for him so it's not that bad. I would still rather see Kukkonen out and Berard in (get some of that offensive D to go with a more def D).

What did you expect? Some blockbuster deal Carter for Jay-Bo or trade Giroux or JVR?

For a big guy, Alberts is a fast skater. He's definitely not a pylon. He has some speed.

On the PK, Alberts was our best puck-clearing defenseman by far. We'll certainly miss that.

I was at Bruins practice this morning when he got word of the trade. He was taken off the ice right in the middle of a drill.

Hope he does well for you guys. I wish he fit in here in Boston, but after being out last season (I think it turned out to be something involving the neck more than a concussion), Hnidy just kind of took his spot.

He looked good in training camp. He was a little slow to start, but got better as training camp and pre-season went along. He did wear an 'A' in a pre-season game as well.

Hope that gives a little bit of insight.

Or, you break it, you get it cheap. Alberts is an upgrade over the the massive hole we have. Sbisa is surprisingly NHL-ready, but he'll most likely be leaving the team anyway, and Kukkonen is not ready to be an everyday player. Alberts fills a gap, he is more than serviceable. Best thing the Flyers could have done right now.

Any idea when he signed his last contract? Summer of '07?

Considering what we gave up, I think this is an excellent move.

Looking at nhlnumbers.com, it looks like he signed his contract last summer and will be a UFA after this season.

Apparently McLaren is on re-entry waivers according to the san jose board, did we move too soon?

OK. I since found this:
Quote:

http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/...r_2_years_25m/

By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff | June 13, 2007

As the Bruins' fifth-round pick in the 2001 draft, Andrew Alberts meets general manager Peter Chiarelli's definition of a "glue guy," the mid-tier homegrown player who fills out the roster.

Yesterday, that glue guy stuck his name on a two-year, $2.5 million contract, a significant bump on his $661,300 salary last season. Alberts would have been a restricted free agent due a one-year qualifying offer of $694,365 without a new deal.

"Boston is where I wanted to be," said Alberts, who will be paid $1.1 million in 2007-08 and $1.4 million in 2008-09. "It's nice to know I have a place to be for two years."

Yeah, he signed a two-year extension in June 2007.

We could try to claim him and if we do get him send Sciba back or move someone else. Both Albert's and McLaren's cap hits would be very close.

I watched McLaren a lot last year cause SJ games were on later when I would be trying to start my HW.

Trust me, you want absolutely nothing to do with him.

I only thing I like about McLaren is his name. It sounds cool.

That's it.

Not saying we should sign him, but if Hatcher can play well with Coburn with 1 leg, can McLaren really be all that bad??

Meh, not bad because we gave up pretty much nothing, should be a bit of a help.

Coburn is just that good. Maybe Coburn and Eminger should be paired all season, Eminger would probably look like god.

They were at the beginning of the game last night, he changed up the pairings....but they were the pairings I wanted to see. They need time to work though considering Coburn and Timonen were together most of the preseason.

Vaananen Timonen
Coburn Eminger

That is what I am saying...I rather have at least someone that is a veteran to get us through until the other guys come back, and send Sbisa back to juniors. I know McLaren is beat up and no where near what he used to be, but maybe playing with someone like Coburn he could be decent. Probably not worth his salary by any means, but on reentry waivers????

I think it's a good move. I don't remember McClaren being any good. Except when he broke Zednik's jaw which wasn't that cool now that I think of it.

I guess Berard really didn't impress at camp.

Alberts will be a good stop-gap. It's a seller's market for solid, top 4, puck-moving defensemen; this is probably the best we could have expected, really, as the Flyers would have had to pay through the roof to get a top 4 guy.

Thats a good point. Berard wouldn't have cost us a trade and we could have signed him to a cheap contract. Its not too late to still sign him and have him play with Alberts.
