It can happen... every once in awhile you hear about a youth or high-school baseball player dying after being hit in the chest.
However, there's a heart condition that can cause sudden death in teenage/young adult athletes... I can't think of what it's called, but autopsies on young athletes who die suddenly while exercising often find evidence of it. Maybe Cherepanov had it and the fact that he collapsed after a hit was coincidence. I don't know how advanced cardiac science in Russia is, or how commonly autopsies are done there, so we may never know.
Thanks LW.
Yeah, it happens to young people.... There are a bunch of sad stories of young guys ... 19 to 22 who die because of their heart condition.
My thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of Alexei Cherepanov... I joined the forum this morning, I was hoping my first post would be on a happier note...
Very terrible, terrible news. One site mentions the lack of medical equipment on site (portable defibrillators) might be to blame for not being able to resuscitate him in time. Hopefully the KHL will take action and ensure proper equipment is in place in all arenas. Hard to convince people it's worth saving $1500 when a young prospect passes away..
I had no idea this has happened until I logged onto HF and the eastern conference page and I see about 10 boards with ''Cherepanov has died'' threads. Shocking. Sickening.
So tragic.

Well RDS still says that contact was made on the ice prior to him collapsing, but TSN is quoting the head coach, saying nothing happened on the ice... mixed reports for now, I guess we'll have to wait... I'm still in shock...

Maybe you're thinking of a heart murmur? Not too sure.
Regardless, I think a similar event happened in Montreal (maybe Quebec) sometime in the last few years, where one elementary school student went into cardiac arrest after getting hit in the chest.

Im sure a video of the game will be released to media outlets, we will get to see what happened.
"According to the Alexander Ovechkin blog, which is a great source for Russian hockey news, the player he collided with was Jaromir Jagr, who was crying and screaming for Cherepanov to wake up."
I found the disorder I was thinking of: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The wikipedia entry was heavy on the medical-ese, but there was a list of athletes believed or suspected to have died of it, including Sergei Zholtok and Mickey Renaud. If you remember back at this year's draft, Matt Carle's brother was drafted by Tampa after being told he can't play sports anymore, I'm pretty sure this is what he was diagnosed with.
