Paul Mara

I have to say that i was quite skeptical when the Rangers brought back Mara this year. But so far he has actually been pretty good. He has been playing with snarl and taking the body. Jumping up into the offense rush, and blasting shots from the point on the PP. He and Staal seem to be a pretty good defensive pair and as of now i can see no real glaring holes in their game.

So far so good.

Mara has been a rock! He is shooting like 800x a game too which is good to see. Our defense in general is just awesome... Staal, Girardi, Kalinin, Mara, Roszival, and Redden have all been fantastic.

Agreed, the difference I notice is that he's putting pucks on net with that bomb of a slapshot. Last year they would all go wide.

I was excited to have him back. We always knew what Paul was capable of and I think we're in for a treat this season. Ever since the end of last season when he returned after the injury to his face he's been playing to his full potential.

I wasn't skeptical that he was brought back, I always felt he had more to offer than he showed last year. But I agree he is off to a great start. I love finally seeing him get some decent powerplay time. And love the extra aggressiveness. I don't doubt that he knows that being in the bottom half of our defensemen in terms of skill, he needs to add something to his game.

Renney is surprising me that the team overall is playing a bit more aggressive, to the point of taking some extra roughing type penalties. My impression from the last few years was - other hard hits and the occasional fight, Renney wanted basically more of a finesse game. Much prefer having a bit more sandpaper to their game, and I think it really helps to win games in the long run.

I hated Mara last year but he has been better this year. Hopefully he keeps the spirited play coming because he does bring something to the table when he has it going.

I still hate some of his decisions with the puck (he tends to ice it a lot and throw it up the boards) but I can live with it as long as he doesn't make any big mistakes and brings other things to the table.

Paul Mara is awesome, I've been saying it for weeks now. Ever since that interview during the playoffs last year when he suddenly sounded like Messier, I wanted him back for this year. The lumberjack beard is the icing on the cake.

Here's what I find the most interesting about this year's team: Renney has all these kind of "marginal" parts playing a game that suits them, and they are all playing better. Simplify and stick to what works for you, trust your team to take care of areas you may not excel in, and don't try to pull the whole game on your shoulders and we'l win.

I was just about to say that Renney is one of the biggest reasons guys like Mara are looking good. He's got him in shape and with the program. Theres a reason Mara floated around from team to team. I still don't think he's much of a crease clearer like some like to say, but he's valuable if he just follows through with what needs to be done - just watch Marc Staal

Mara has been a pleasant surprise so far. I hope he keeps it up! Having him back at a cheaper price makes it even better.

I'm trying to come up with the most polite way to say "I told ya so"

It was only 4 seasons ago he scored 47 points with Phoenix. Add that to a mean streak that he's been showing recently, and he's a steal at $1.9 million.

Keep thinking until we're 55 games into the season

IMO he's been playing like this since his return last year in late March.

He certainly seems to be one of the leaders in the lockerroom.

He's the man. I hope they resign him after this season. Keep him on the 3rd pairing. Bring in Sangs or DZ next season. No need to rush both. Mara is a great mentor.

i like the way he is playing.....he jumps up into the play and is shooting well....he just needs to keep it up....if he can continue to get shots on goal i can see him getting 25 assists or so just from deflections or rebound goals

He is in fact playing very well and his signing the 1 year deal shows a willingness to stay in New York which is why I wouldn't be at all surprised if he returned again and signed a 2-3 year deal at a similar discount. Perfect # 5-6 D-Man for us at the moment.

It's AMAZING how much more that shot is hitting the net in comparison to last season!!!

I'd take Mara over Aaron Ward anyday.

Yea, a few seasons ago Mara netted ~15 goals. He has always had the ability to repeat that, and I think this season he just might.

I have always liked what he did for the team and wanted him back...even when I was flamed. Glad more people see what he can contribute now.
