They just don't. I think Higgins game is based on breaking to open areas, and getting a shot off when he gets the puck in flight, at least on the rush.

Inside the zone, Higgins likes to forecheck create turnovers, move the puck to a playmaker and get open. He plays more north south, while Kovalev will circle until he finds what he wants, his linemates read him, and A.Kost. has a few similarities.

Higgins plays tentaive when with him, it goes against his strengths, and Kovalev isn't going to be as useful in more of an up and down, shoot as soon as possible type of line.

It's about the only combination of the top 9 that I don't like. I'm not crazy about Kovy/Koivu, too many alpha puck handlers but it works over the short haul.

Lats has always played better with Koivu, so why not?

Is Higgins playing tomorrow? A Higgins-Lang-Kostitsyn line looks just as good as the 1st 2 lines.

He's doing well, he earned his shot.

I'm actually more excited of the posibilities of the Lang line...with Higgins on it I'm betting that line gets used more often than the Koivu line down the road.

Well deserved by Lats. He's a very offensive minded player and I'm sure he'll eventually hit the net more than Higgins.

Also, Koivu and Tanguay need Latendresse to create space in the offensive zone. Higgins is quick and a hard worker but he doesn't hit as much as Latendresse.

Higgins will look good with SK's sick passes though...

Balance... Balance... I don't remember seeing a Habs team with so much balance and depth up front...

Will this thread get moved at the end of that one too? I find it odd, there are a million threads here yet news of the day gets merged somewhere that is difficult to find. You have to stumble upon the news or somebody else makes another thread.

Free Kostitsyn (André, pas Serge)

As much as people love the AKost-Pleks-Kovy line, I really feel as though Andrei is ready to step up and carry his own line. He hasn't been getting as many touches as I would have liked, and probably never will as long as he's playing with Kovy. If the line continues to play just OK (not great) for another 2-3 games, why not try the following:

Lats-Pleks-Kovy (remember the GUI-UNIT line from last year? C'tait po' pi')
Tanguay-Koivu-A.Kost (let Tanguay and Andrei play their natural positions)
Higgins-Lang-S.Kost
Laraque-Lapierre-Kostopoulos

I'm open to other combos, but the point is that I think it's time to FREE KOSTITSYN.

Who's with me???

Awesome, this is just what I was hoping for on Higgins' return. Latendresse needs time on that line to blossom -- he's earned it so far, and demoting him for a player who hasn't played yet this year would be the wrong message to send.

Christopher Higgins is now a vet on this team and is old enough to know the deal. It's not like he's playing with Smolinski and Dandenault. Higgins to me is a guy who can do just the same with Lang and S.Kost as he did with Saku Koivu.

Are we a powerhouse?

Well, are we?

With the injured players returning, the lines at practice today were:

Plekanec/Kovalev/A. Kostitsyn
Koivu/Latendresse/Tanguay
Lang/S. Kostitsyn/Higgins
Lapierre/Kostopoulos/Laraque
Begin/Dandenault as spares

How many times can teams shut all three of the scoring lines? Plus, in Hamilton, you got: Maxwell/Pacioretty/D'Agostini and Chipchura/Trotter/Stewart, not to mention White and Desharnais.

Defensively you got:

Markov/Komisarek
Hamrlik/O'Byrne
Bouillon/Gorges
Breezer as a spare

The future looks bright too: Weber, Valentenko, Carle, Subban, Yemelin, McDonaugh, and Fisher. I'm salivating over the depth of the D-corps....

Then between the pipes you got Price, Halak, and Desjardins all in their very early twenties!

I think Bob and Trevor Timmons should be nominated for sainthood!

There's no point to "free" Andrei yet. The team has 7 of a possible 8 points. Why change the line-up?
