Greene has also played in the Stanley Cup Finals and arrived here with a great reputation and a fair amount of respect for a defenseman his age.
I am not saying that Greene does not deserve an extension, because he more then likely does. I am just saying that he has not done much in a Kings uniform to justify it.
seems a bit high for Greene. Woulda liiked him more in the $2.5 mil range
I can only assume that Dean sees him as a 2nd pairing defenseman for the remainder of his tenure in LA. Because $2.95 million/year for a 3rd pairing guy will handcuff Dean when Johnson, Doughty, Hickey, Teubert and Voinov get their second contracts.
is he really? i think many people have really confused his one good year *** payout with his actual ability.
Oh no, I'm not suggesting that he's worth anything like 3.75 million at the moment. But in the post-Finger world, that seems to be the going rate for young, tough #4/5 guys. I mean, has Matt Greene proved he's worth 3 million a year yet? Not even close, but there's hope for him, and I think you have to gamble on your own young defensemen now to avoid paying even more for someone else's. That ought to be the lesson learned from Finger and Commodore - if you don't develop and sign your own guys, you're going to pay through the nose for someone else's leftovers.
Too much for right now...by the end of the contract it'll be perfectly fine.
But, will this affect the Johnson contract negotiations? If Greene is worth $2.95 million, Johnson may demand $4+ million. I know that Greene gave up UFA years, but I think that Johnson will want to be the highest paid Kings defenseman going forward.

ya, am I missing something? Is Greene even a legit top 4 defender across all teams yet? I think he'd struggle just to get to that level, yet he's 5 years for $3 mil?
At the same time, DL has ensured he didn't lose Lubo for nothing. We now have both of these players for the duration of Lubo's contract. Props to him for coming through on his gamble. DL really does break the bank when it's al ong term contract, really strange.

Yes, Johnson would probably want more. And to be honest, I don't think Johnson is deserving of a contract even of this stature yet. His play doesn't warrant anything near 3 million a year. I don't know how that'll turn out.

I do not think that Johnson deserves it either. But if Johnson will be playing top minutes on the the defense and Greene is getting 3rd or 4th defenseman minutes it will probably enter Jack's mind "Why does this guy get paid more than me"?

If JJ hasn't blow everyone out of the water by contract time, he's going to get a 2-year bridge contract - which guys like Matt Greene, Jarret Stoll, Shawn Horcoff got a few years ago.

This. I seen an extension coming a mile away. I don't like the terms tho, seems a little high. He's a bottom pairing dman at best right now, but with his age maybe they see some nice upside.
So that's Brown, Kopitar, Sully, Stoll, and Greene all locked up, with Doughty, Simmonds, and Moller all on the first year of their ELCs, and Preissing and Zeus on the second year of their respective four year deals. Frolov on his second to last year of his deal.
Mental math real quick, for the next three years, at least...
Kopitar - 6.8
Brown - 3.1
Sully - 2.9
Stoll - 3.6
Frolov - 2.9
Greene - 2.9
Zeus - 4
Preissing - 2.75
Moller, Doughty, Simmonds - 1 each
So that's a core with an approx. combined cap hit of roughly 34 million. Assuming Johnson gets overpaid with something like 5 per, that still puts us under the cap floor with 8 forwards and 4 defensemen locked up.
I like how our everyone calls our top pairing Dman and alternate captain a bottom pairing guy at best, epsecially when our D is the most improved part of the team thus far.
Greene is ferocious, clears the front of the net very well going up against Thorton, Marleau, Perry and Getzlaf so far. He is aggressive, a good leader and will be playing against the top lines all season long and most likely next season as well. Probably the year after that too. It will take Tuebert to come up and evolve into a top pairing shutdown guy to take that spot from Greene. Everyone loves to cream over the Doughty-Johnson pairing next year, but they are our two top offensive dmen in terms of type of game, skating and mobility, so they will most likely be split between the top two pairings for a while. Greene will be top 4 on this team most of that contract. Get used to it. So far he has only shown that he is up to the challenge.
The more I think about it the less I am liking this deal. Greene may never be more than a 5-6 defenseman on this team, and when guys like Hickey, Voinov, Martinez and Teubert make it onto the roster he may be lucky to be the 7th guy. Unless Dean is planning on trading one of the above players.

It seems a little high now....if the cap is 62-65 million in 3 years it is brilliant.
You also can't forget intangibles. He is a hard worker, is an assistant captain, and he really is the kind of guy that every championship caliber team has. He is still only 25 and defenseman like him don't peak until their late 20's anyways.

Not bad.
Frolov has only 2 years (this and next season) After that I cannot imagine him signing for less than $5 million/year.
