Should Valiquette be a starer?

Vally can flat out play.

Last year he had a 2.19 GAA and .916 SV%. I know it was just 13 games, but out of those, he played 1 bad one that I remember.

A few days ago, he was acceptable. Today, he's been great so far. If we win this game, he's going to be one of the top 3 stars, maybe even the #1 star if Toskala winds up giving up a goal before the OT is over.

He has good reflaxes, good movement, good attitude.

Being the good guy that he is, Vally doesn't demand anything. Nor can he on the Rangers team.

But if I were his agent, I'd want him to sign with another team that has more questionable goaltending because Vally deserves a shot to start.

P.S. As I'm writing this, the Maple Laughs are on the PP and Vally just made several nice stops.

P.P.S. Fans just began chanting "vally, vally, vally"

If you grade his performance on a scale where 0 is terrible (pulled), 1 is bad, 2 is weak, 3 is ok, 4 is good and 5 is excellent, most nights Vally is either a 4 or a 5. Not for a backup, for any starter.

In fact, I'd say that half of his games are a 5, a quarter are a 4, and most of the rest are 3s. His bad games are far and few between, but all players have those occasionally.

The fact is that he's a good goalie. He deserves a chance to start somewhere next year.

Well, we have Lundqvist, who's younger and better. But while Vally may not be a Vezina-contender, I feel he's a solid starter.

P.S. Sjo just scored a beautiful goal. He is another player who should play on the top 3 lines.

Put him with Callahan, I bet they'll be real good.

SSAAAAVE by Valiquette. And the Rangers win.

I looked at Lundy and Vally talking just now, both laughing and genuinely happy. It's nice how they help out each other, and glad for one another.

Vally is a good guy (as is Lundy) and I hope he makes his millions by starting somewhere.

Vally can be a starter on a bottom feeding team in desperate need of a goalie. I know we all love him, as do I, but you're overrating him if you think he can sustain anything more.

Why is that bad news...

Valiquette is a great backup that was a gift from nowhere, but not once in his Ranger career, let alone whole career, that he can start a string of games in a row. Vally signed for under 1 million to be the backup goalie to arguably the best goalie in the NHL without even looking into other teams. He is happy in New York. He is happy with his current situation, and he is overwhelmingly happy with his current goalie coach, who completely turned around his career. Is it possible that in the future he goes looking for a potential job with more games? Yes, but he hasn't proven he can start even 40 games in a season, let alone a whole year, and he is happy in his situation right now. Unless he got some incredible offer to start a significantly large number of games I don't see him leaving NY unless Sather initiates it.

This is a guy I ALWAYS thought was NHL caliber when he was with the Islanders and then in Russia. I never understood why he wasn't given more of a chance in the back-up role.

Granted, I don't think he could ever be a starter.

Vally would definitely be the starter in LA. Not sure about anywhere. But when it comes to back ups, he's one of the best around.

I meant it is bad news if he wants to be a starter b/c that wont happen in NY. I like him but in no way does he compare to Lundy.

Should he be? Not here.

Could he be on another team. Absolutely.

Why not?

He was never given a chance to play 45+ games, but the games that he's played, he's played well in. He looks like he has the tools and with the goalie coach teaching him the last couple of years, he's really improved and will continue to improve more the rest of this season.

I think he might start somewhere next year.

Any team that has him as a starter will be fighting for the #1 overall pick. Sorry to say.

There is a reason why bullpen arms are in the bull pen.
There is a reason why 6th men in the NBA are 6th men.
And there is a reason why a back up Goalie is a back up.

Once said player is given more responsibility, more often than not, they get exposed because they are not used to the game by game grind.

He has found his niche.

He's awesome at what he does, and at his age I doubt he really cares to go test the waters at some scrub team. Unless of course they give him some silly contract where he'd be stupid to refuse.

Really good back up now, he has worked hard to take his game up a notch and a half. He is clearing pucks to the side, no juicy rebounds these days. No swiss cheese holes at all, he plays solid, best Ranger tonite.

Vally is a terrific backup, but I doubt he'll be anything more in this league. There's only so many starter spots, and there are better guys playing in a tandem situation that would be lured away with the better contract offers, so we probably don't have to worry about losing him.

That said, if he does get the chance, I wouldn't hold against him for taking it either.

It wouldn't surprise me if someone throws him a decent contract next season to be a starter, most likely on a team that has a young up & coming goalie that he can mentor.

Don't let this get out, or we'll have 12 Valiquette to Colorado for Wolski or Stastny next time Budaj loses.
