One thing to remember is that when they drafted Staal, there was no guarantee that Malkin was coming over to NA anytime soon.

If it wasn't for Malkin's surprise defection from the RSL, Staal would very likely have been the 2nd line center in PIT behind Crosby.

Like comparing apples and oranges man, Naslund was what? 28? already at his peak at that point. Staal is 20 freaking years old!!! His prime is potentially 4-8 years from now and he has already had a 29 goal season.

Its cause the pens have had such young guys the past few years coming in and being huge contributors. Fleury starter at 20, Crosby 18, Malkin 20. So after Staal gets everyones hopes up high at 18 we just assume he won't have any growing pains, which he certainly is. It does seem like he doesn't get to the net at all for a big guy, but lately hes been hitting more at least.

and other than Kessel, the other players listed have only played a year, while Staal has played 2. Who's to say one of these players points will drop and have a sophmore slump too? Staal just turned 20, he had a bad season in terms of stats, but still has plenty of time to get better.
his rookie year was not very special either. He had a fluke season of shorthanded goals and because of that has been extremely overrated.

I get what you're saying, but Staal's 29 goal rookie year was pretty impressive considering he was not getting top 6 ice time and barely played on the power play (6 points total on the season). It's not like he was simply benefiting from Crosby and Malkin. Granted, I don't know if he does it again. You'd think he'd pass that total at some point in his career. But I'm, still waiting for Rick Nash to pass the 41 goals he got his 2nd year. And Rick Nash is no bust. Or maybe a better comp would be Marek Svatos. He's never been as good as his rookie season either. And both Staal and Svatos had way more goals than assist in those rookie years.

Staal is FAR from a bust.

However, the Pens should have picked Toews.
