Pettinger to Tampa, claimed on Waivers

Matt got picked up by his Bear Mountain buddies on Waivers. There is a extra 550K cap hit for the year for us.

According to HockeyCentral at noon

But we'll be back to having 10 million in available salary pretty soon.

all part of Gillis' plan. He knew Sundin was planning on signing but couldn't announce it until Pettinger was claimed. We should be hearing something shortly

So do we have enough for a lineup tonight?

Dan Hank Bernier
Raymond Wellwood Pyatt
Burrows Kessler Hansen
Brown Johnson ???

Ohlund Edler
Bieksa Mitchell
Nycholat O Brien

Dress Davidson as well tonight? 7 Dmen?

Davison can play forward as well. If Rypien isn't ready to go you'll likely see him lineup with Brown and Johnson.

So when all is said and done we got absolutely nothing in return for Matt Cooke. Fantastic asset management.

Thank god we managed to keep a useless guy who plays less than 3 minutes a game and got rid of a guy who was great on the PK, fast as hell, and gave you an option on the 4th line.

Keeping Brown instead of Pettinger was a BAD decision by Gillis. Brown doesn't bring anything to the table that we don't already have with Hordichuk, Rypien, and a few of our big boys on defense. He had to know that Pettinger and/or Wellwood would be claimed.

So now do we not only lose a player, but we have to pay half his salary to boot.

First bad decision by Gillis in my books.

Pettinger doesn't really bring anything to the table. But I wouldn't disagree about it being a bad, or more accurately a questionable decision.

*BIGGER* problem was Gillis put himself into a such a position that his only alternatives was to bring up two guys via re-entry waivers. Not good GM'ing.

He got picked up by the first team that had a shot at him.

Seems like either Gillis didn't do his homework, or lost him on purpose. Perhaps he's given up on spending all that cap space this season and the ownership would rather not pay him his full salary to sit on the farm.

They'll just call up Krog. He's probably on his way to Columbus right now.

Because Matt Cooke was oh so valuable. Washington lost him for nothing too, you know.

I don't think Gillis is that stupid there is probably something up his sleeve. (I hope)

Anyone else have the feeling that Gillis feels he has to do something in order to feel effective. Waiving Wellwood and Pettinger in the first place seeming more of a knee-jerk reaction. Maybe he felt he was sitting on his hands and was just itching to see something Canuck related on the sports ticker. After assembling a team and starting a season, how busy is a GM? Yeah, they make calls to one another looking for trades, but mid-October to early December is probably one of the more boring stints as a GM. Usually not much in the way of roster movement, most waiver activity has died off... I think Gillis got restless and waived Pettinger for proverbial ***** and giggles. Rookie GM mistake.

Krog would have to go through re-entry waivers as well, and not be available for 24 hours.

I'm thinking they will just go with 7 d tonight, and sort things out for Saturday. Should have a couple bodies back for Edmonton.

So we loose a solid two way hockey player with wheels... local guy who couldn't wait to play for the team for... for....

This is working out real well Mike. McIver and Pettinger for nothing so far...

Anyone notice any other teams losing players off waivers? Anyone think that other GM's might have it in for the Aquilini's / Gillis?

Anaheim (Burke / Nonis) an in-your-face pick-up of McIver
Tampa (Neil Broughton, was interviewed and had as "much" experience as Gillis as a GM) a, who's-the-GM-now pick-up of Pettinger

I dunno... probably a stretch but... it's not doing much to dispel the sentiment out there that Gillis isn't that well liked.

That's Aquilinis problem, it's not like we're up against the cap. And he was being paid 1.1 mil to play in Manitoba.

according to the Globe, Krog has been called up:

Quote:
The team has called up veteran NHLers Jason Krog and Kyle Wellwood from its AHL affiliate in Manitoba, presuming they clear re-entry waivers. Mike Brown will fill the enforcer role on the fourth line, and Lawrence Nycholat will play for Salo.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servl.../WBhockeyblog/

Kind of odd though - he seems to think Krog needs to clear re-entry waivers.
