Downie and Ross down, Nödl up

I feel a little bit bad for Downie, but that is outweighed by my joy for the third austrian this season to play a regular season NHL game. I hope for Nödl and for the entire team that he will do very well.

Thomas Pöck plays D for the Islanders. He was in 4 games this season so far and has 1 Assist and is +2. He is actually from the area where I live. I don't know him personally but my stepfather knows his father.

Nodl will be the 5th Austrian. Reinhard Divis (St. Louis) and Christoph Brander (Minnesota) have also played in the NHL.

What I want to know is how many instance has a team had a Swiss and Austrian on the same bench in an NHL game (Yet, we don't have a single Czech, Russian, Slovak or Swede)

The Islanders have Pöck and Mark Streit who is Swiss. They were even playing together for much of the Buffalo game. Or is that what you were talking about?

Tuesday, October 21

9:35 a.m.
The Philadelphia Flyers recalled forward Andreas Nodl from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, on Tuesday morning according to club general manager Paul Holmgren.

In five games for the Phantoms this season, Nodl has a goal and two assists for three points and six penalty minutes.

The 21-year-old Vienna, Austria native was drafted in the second round by the Flyers (39th overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, and is expected to make his NHL debut on Wednesday when Philadelphia hosts the San Jose Sharks (7:00 p.m., Comcast SportsNet).

He will wear uniform #14.
The last Flyers 2nd round pick to come directly out of the system and play for the Flyers was Jean-Marc Pelletier.

If you want to be technical, it was actually Pat Kavanagh, but he bounced around with Vancouver before actually playing for us.

umlaut can generally be viewed as tacking an e onto the vowel, and that is how it is typed out if you don't have an umlaut available -- also, there are a fair number of German words where they've squished "oe," "ue," etc. into umlauts.

So, you can think of it as Noedl...but he's Austrian, so the pronunciation is going to be a bit different than the High German I was taught.

Oh god, there was some big discussion about this in some thread during the preseason.

Here's one but not the one I was thinking of.

It's difficult to describe. You pronounce the "ö" pretty much like the "eu" in the french word "bleu", if that helps.

It's safe to say it's going to get bastardized by American broadcasters.

His name is pronounced similar to the most common word in this song (and yes, the song is stupid). The word in there is "Knödel" which literally means dumpling. Just leave out the K and swallow the e.

Just try this: "Melt" together the o of No and the e sound as in Eminger. Start by going "Oh, Eh" and make it a bit faster until it becomes a single sound. That's the best description I can give for it.

Just go with whatever Jim Jackson says. You can tell he takes his job and his pronunciations very seriously. I never hear him say a name a certain way, and then find out later that it's incorrect. He always seems to have it right.

Speaking of which, I'm assuming the way he has been pronouncing "Sbisa" is correct, but it sounds so ugly to me and I really hate saying it, lol. He kind of says, "Sbeeza" and really runs the 's' and 'b' together almost making it a 'p' sound, kind of like "Speeza."

I was really just hoping it would be pronounced more of the way it looks. More like, "Sabisa." Hmmm, typing out pronunciations is hard, haha. How's this...when I say, "Sabisa", it rhymes with, "The Lisa".

Normally, I just go with whatever Jackson says when it's a tough name, but I think with Luca I might just have to stick with my own version.

Like I said, Jackson will do a good job pronouncing it. Coatesy, on the other hand...lol, you can forget it. He's still trying to figure out Eric Desjardins.

The problem is going to be that umlauts are simply tough for Americans to pronounce, as it isn't really in our dialect.

"Sbeeza" is pretty much correct. Here's the central scouting video for NHL on the Fly about Sbisa, including Sbisa pronouncing his name:
