You know what, can we just get him on Coatesy's Corner and have the first question be 'how the **** do you say your name?"

True, true...I was going to point out that even though Jackson seems to try his very best, some names are just going to be tough to nail, for him or any other American. He probably won't absolutely nail it, but I'd expect him to be very close.

Yeah, I can just see Coatesy...

"Hi there, folks! Welcome to Coatesy's Corner! We're here with Andrea Noodle. Did I get that right, Andrea? You know Andrea, here in the states, your name can also be used for a girl. And Noodle, that's an interesting last name. Do you like pasta?"

Sure. Still likely to get Americanized.

God, I must be retarded. Why didn't I think of this earlier.
The easiest way to teach somebody how an Ö sounds in german is of course the name of Nödl and my homecountry in the native language, Österreich. The name of Austria is "Österreich" in german, and where does that name appear more often than our national anthem.

It took me some time to find a video where the lyrics are sung though.
Here's a video of a girl singing. The anthem starts about one minute into the video and at about 1:20 she sings the chorus which includes "Österreich" twice:

Noe-dl

You gotta sort of drop it back in your throat a bit. It's not "ooh," more "oh."

**** that, that's too complicated for my talking about him in my home with my kids. I don't think I can bring myself to call him "noodle" (probably the closest we'll get from announcers here) so I'll probably just go with how I pronounced it when I first saw his name (after the draft) N-ah'-dle. It'll work for me and nobody else in the family will care much. I wonder how they will pronounce it on my kids Xbox game, lol. That should be funny to hear.

Good example, pretty sure I got it now.

The Dumpling song is awesome, wish I knew what he was saying though.

I've been saying it with a "no" sound since I first saw it. Sort of like, "Nodle." I guess you could say it rhymes with, "total."

I suppose it's not quite correct, but nonetheless...that's what I've been saying.

Yep, same here...figured it was wrong at the time, but whatever.

Quick correction to above: "Refrain" is the german word for chorus. Mixed it up there.

The Chorus of the Ködelsong literally translates to this:
We want dumplings today
but only big ones with a delicious sauce
We want dumplings today
we don't want to eat anything else, yes that's what we want

I agree that it is tough for Americans to say Nodl simply because we didn't learn those pronunciations when we are learning the English language while we were young

I believe the same effect would be trying to get a Japanese person to distinguish between an "L" and an "R". In Japanese, I believe those two letters are the same or something. Only Japanese people who grew up in America speaking English can correctly distinguish between the pronunciations.

It's not so much laziness as as much as it is a missed oppurtunity to learn certain sounds when our brain is at its best point in development to learn languages (2 years old). It is much harder to learn a language when your an adult then when your younger, and this is a proven fact.

That being said, it is still possible to learn new languages as an adult.

You could just use "Wir wollen heute Knödel" and maybe link to the video but I am not sure how the signature rules in this forum work.

I couldn't fit the whole chorus, so I went with a twist.

Noh-dul is how I've been saying it since he was drafted, and unless Andreas or JJ says otherwise, that's what I'm going with.
