Whay Not Paul Kariya?

OK, we might as well start with the reasons he would/wouldn't sign in Buffalo and whether he would even be a fit.

Even if this team was willing to pony up the cash to sign him, and he wanted to come to Buffalo, (all a minor miracle in themsevles) I still would take a pass. I've never been a big fan of Kariya, and he's been on the slide in recent years. He's becoming injury prone, and he already plays a soft enough style. He's a talented little player, but I just never saw his appeal. I suppose I still don't.

Nah,you don't even have to worry about preference...money makes the world go round and we aren't willing to spend it.

I agree, he wouldn't be a good fit w/ this team at all.

He reminds me far too much of Miro Satan, he just disappearsor goes on short hot streaks once in a while.

I like the way the team is going. They are the youngest team in the league and need to develop those players and don't need the added salary of a player who is probably past his prime. We don't want Lindros either.

Eh, I'm not big on the idea of adding a small winger (get it.... ) that has trouble staying healthy.

I've been thinking about Selanne the last couple days though. I'd offer him the following deal:

1 year, $1.5 mil guaranteed. Bonuses added based on goals (20,30,40), points (60,70,80,90), games played (78), All Star game played and making an All Star Team. If he hits all the bonuses he could make a maximum of $5 million in addition to the $1.5 mil.

Also there's be a two year option that could be activated if he hit a certain level of bonuses. $3 mil base salary each year plus the same $5 mil bonus structure. The maximum value would be $22.5 mil over 3 years which is a lot but if Selanne ends up getting that much money, it'll be because he's earned it. If he's not interested he can sign with someone else, I don't care.

Selanne will likely get a 2 year 10 mil deal guaranteed. He isn't going to take an incentive laden deal.

Sorry, but I don't like the idea of giving a player financial incentive to become completely selfish and not worry about his own end of the rink.

Throw some +/- incentives in.

I'd be inclined to make this offer to Kariya instead. He gambled and lost by signing a low-end contract with the Avs. Coming off an injury plagued season, an offer like this would be a good starting point.

Generally speaking, since I don't think Kariya is coming anywhere East, let alone Buffalo, how about using wins for incentives rather than individual stats....

You know what, I meant to include a playoffs incentive but I completely forgot to.

Then I guess his salary would be pretty low with playoff incentives

With any luck.

Well I know making the playoffs was an incentive in McKee's deal. I'm willing to guess that it was probably thrown into most contracts signed last year by the Sabres so it's certainly something the new ownership is willing to do.
