Thing is, I don't remember him stealing games in the Olympics. Whenever Nitty has won anything he has great teams in front of him.

You have to outright rob teams of victories playing behind this defense. Neither of our goalies can do that consistently.

He was amazing in the Olympics, as far as I can remember.

My memory is a bit yellow/blueish tainted though ^^

Guys pad their stats against the weak teams in the Olympics, but Nitty played some epic games...particularly the game against Sweden.

Sometimes you just need a keeper to give you a chance. We have no hope with biron in net. I can see this game going 5-2, maybe even 6-2

This is essentially pond hockey the Flyers play. If our goalies were up to the task, this would be a fun style of play.

The Flyers offense has been pretty good this season. I'd be surprised if they get shutout the rest of the way.

In other news...Zednik just scored his first goal of the season. Nice to see him back after the terrible incident last year.

Really? I remember him being good but I thought he had low shots against and Finland was stellar defensively.

If you enjoy watching your team lose. Teams that play pond hockey lose in the NHL...at epic rates.

Note the Penguins went from a mediocre team to a Cup contender when they learned that lesson last year.

They will get shutout at least once this season...most likely more than once.

Goalie: the most important position in hockey.

Hot goalie = surprise run to the ECF in 07/08; see also, Cechmanek carrying the team to stellar regular seasons in the early 00s.

Bad goalies = Worst record in the NHL in 06/07, and a winless start to 08/09

Sweden was creating some pretty stellar chances.

PL3 will only be here until Holik gets back, but it's nice for the Devils to have a guy that can finally beat Cote in a fight!!!

Not getting into this with you again. Just because teams currently don't win with pond hockey doesn't make it impossible to do so. The Oilers have several banners hanging from the rafters and Grant Fuhr was left stranded quite a lot.

Twenty years ago was twenty years ago.

What's changed? Coaching and talent throughout rosters...the 80s Oilers (even with their ridiculous number of HoF players -- another problem under a salary cap) would have to vastly alter how they played the game in order to win in this NHL.

Coaching has killed that style of hockey...there's no going back, no matter how nostalgic you might want to be.

that was that era, though.

the last 15 years have shown that hockey has changed to the point where teams need systems to fall back on. teams that have systems, and more importantly, really good defense, are going to win. i don't see that changing any time soon.
