Another way to get rid of head shot?

So after the recent hit on Sutter by Weight (let's not get into clean/dirty/legal/illegal, there's a whole 10 pages of that already) everyone's talking again about how to reduce injuries. Sean McCormick on Sportsnet has an interesting idea:
Quote:
Rather than going the direct route to crack down on hits to the head, why not make it a penalty to fish for loose pucks with your head down in the neutral zone? I'm not entirely clear on what the implications of this proposal would be, but I can guarantee the Hurricanes that they won't ever have to worry about Brandon Sutter breaking the rule
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/blogs...ick_head_hits/

Now I know there's a few things wrong with this, one of them being who in their right mind would call a penalty on Sutter after what just happened to him. However, the point remains. Is there a way to legislate the protection of players without putting limits on the ability to throw hits?

I feel like Sportsnet just does and says outrageous things to get people to talk about them. Remember when they actually had Eklund on their Trade Deadline show

Or you could just teach young players to not skate with their heads down.

You were just smart and never flicked over to see that. It was painful although he predicted every trade, because he predicted everyone would be traded for everyone.

I don't understand how all of a sudden this is an issue?

It's pathetic listening to these analysts talk about it, forgetting that they are the ones that promote the stuff when they show replays of guys like Stevens laying big hits and then glorifying them. Isn't that right Pierre Maguire....or is there two kinds of MONSTERS!

Daymond Langkow got destroyed last week, but just because he doesn't get a concussion or lay motionless we don't talk about it?

I guess it was ok when Scott Stevens was concussing guys, but now it's an issue...give me a ****in break!

It boggles the mind the way hockey fans and media think....they raise issues about how to prevent hits to the head, but fighting is ok because its a part of the game.

Or we could just embrace legal headshots as wonderful hits like we used to back in the day.

These players make tons of money in part because they play an entertaining and DANGEROUS sport.

I ****ing hate it when they make the victim into the culprit. **** it's like when Carbonneau said :

"Yeah it's dangerous to have your head down, but for christ sake, in a hockey game, want it or not, you'll have to eventually look down on the ice from time to time... because that's where the puck is."

Also the slap on the wrist and the double standard of "He has a reputation of dirty play so big suspension. He doesn't, so small punishment".

Yeah, those broadcasters need to remember how they influence these young players. Doug Weight is a very impressionable 37 year-old.

The problem with Stevens' big hits were that they were generally dirty, but stayed within the rules. I don't know why there wasn't more outrage over him headhunting and concussing players, but he's one of those guys who got a pass from the media because he was a 'leader' and so on.

Langkow didn't get hit in the head.

Agree on Stevens. He hit to injure. The infamous hit on Lindros is a prime example. He raised his shoulder into his head. It was as dirty as it gets.

The NHL, WHL, LHJMQ and probably the minor pro leagues around North America are the last leagues in the world who don't have a Checking To The Head rule. It's in all Jr.A in Canada (where players like Zajac, Turris and Cogliano were drafted from), and it has NOT reduced hitting at all, contrary to what the NHL "experts" say it will do.

Wouldn't be that hard. It's his head that is so tough. Once you get through the concrete skull you have to get through all those rocks.

Every hit is an attempt to injure. When you smack into each other with the amount of force these players can generate what do you think you are intending to do?

That's why there is a rush when you play hockey. And football. It's the only way in modern times to be a warrior. And yes I am serious.
