Sabres 2008-09

Chain's Edit: For use as a collection point for reports on injury ONLY. Take discussion to other threads. This is designed as a one-stop shop for those looking for injury information, not as a conversation thread. Thanks.

Paul Gaustad had thumb surgery to repair a torn ligament on 9/30.
http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/454181.html
Quote:
Meanwhile, Gaustad was visiting a doctor today regarding his right thumb, which was operated on Tuesday. Original estimates had him missing at least three to four weeks, but Gaustad said he could be out six weeks.
From Ruff's Press Conference
http://sabres.nhl.com/index.html
Tim Connolly didn't practice with the team today, but skated on his own beforehand. He's missed the last 4 games with a bad back. Ruff says he doubtful for the Detroit game. Whether he'll be ready for the season opener will depend on if he's able to practice and get in condition.

Drew Stafford was seeing a doctor about an ear injury from last night's fight. Doesn't sound like anything serious. Ruff made a joke about cauliflower.

Connolly: '100 percent' for Friday
Quote:
Tim Connolly skated for 90 minutes today in HSBC Arena -- and was one of the last Sabres off the ice after practice. He's not expected to play Sunday in Detroit so when I asked him if it was realistic to think he could play Friday after missing the last five preseason games, he kind of looked at me like I had two heads.

"[It's] 100 percent. Absolutely. I played one preseason game last year and got off to the best start of my career (seven points in the first five games). If you can play, you can play. I feel great. I'm ready to go out there and compete."

Looks like Goose is the only player out.

Connolly, Stafford join Sabres at full speed

Connolly has a hairline fracture of a vertebrae in his back per Lindy Ruffs postgame press conference.

He's expected to be back in about a week unless he breaks anything else.

Please use this thread only as a reference for injury reports and save the commentary for the threads below. Only injuries/illnesses should be posted here. That way visitors can easily check on the status of players without starting new threads and having to sift through pages of comments.

Perhaps you can keep the first post updated with the latest injury news? That way even if some commentary makes it in, the summary of "who's out" is always easily accessible?

It's a good idea but I don't have time for it. You're welcome to volunteer your own to maintain such a thread.

surgery

Quote:
Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier announced that center Jochen Hecht underwent surgery today on his finger after being injured in Monday's 7-1 victory against the New York Islanders.

Hecht is expected to be out a couple of weeks.

More from TBN:

Quote:
Center Paul Gaustad (thumb) again skated with teammates during the skating-only portion of practice, then left when team drills began. Centers Jochen Hecht (finger) and Tim Connolly did not participate at all.
And... Sabres' Connolly back on ice; won't play tonight

Quote:
Tim Connolly, who has yet to play for the Buffalo Sabres this season because of two fractured vertebrae in his back, returned to the ice this morning for the first time in 11 days. He will not, however, play in tonight's game against Boston in HSBC Arena, and there is no timetable for his official comeback.
Quote:
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said the team will wait for Connolly to be fully healthy before inserting him in the lineup. There were times last season when Connolly would play in games and not practice, but Ruff said they will avoid that scenario this time. If Connolly comes back, it will be because he's 100 percent

Injury/recovery status was reported during last night's game broadcast.

Hecht/Guastad - on schedule to return in 2 weeks
Connolly - possibly could play within a week

Rivet - no change from at least 2 weeks

**POSTGAME UPDATE**

Coach Lindy Ruff said the injury was a deep cut above Tallinder's ankle. As of now, Weber will not be summoned, but that could change.

Quote:

Henrik Tallinder missed the final two periods Saturday night after getting clipped by a skate and suffering a gash on his ankle. He stayed in the dressing room as a precaution and should be available tonight against the Sens. Captain Craig Rivet will likely be sidelined another 10 days after undergoing minor knee surgery.

Centers Paul Gaustad (thumb), Tim Connolly (back) and Jochen Hecht (finger) continued making progress Sunday. Gaustad and Connolly had progressed so much that Ruff refused to rule out either player for tonight’s game.

However, there seems a better chance both would remain on the sidelines because there is no reason to hurry them back.

They should be back within a week but nobody will be back for Thursdays game.

Quote:
"(Paul) Gaustad and (Tim) Connolly are the closest," Ruff said, noting that he doesn't expect any new additions for the team's next contest, at home Thursday against Tampa Bay. "Both players should be back within the week, and Jochen (Hecht) is the furthest. He could be past the week, maybe a bit longer."

Ruff also updated his two injured defensemen, saying captain Craig Rivet had surgery and everything went well. Rivet is riding a bike lightly, and Henrik Tallinder may be back by the weekend after suffering a cut that makes it "real tough to put a skate on."

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Tim Connolly, the Buffalo Sabres' talented but injury-prone center, missed today's practice with a sore groin. The team is hoping the day off will allow him to be healthy for the next game, Friday night against Atlanta in HSBC Arena.

Connolly is questionable for Friday's game against Columbus in HSBC Arena.

"Tim's just got a bruised chest, so he's going to be day-to-day," Ruff said. "Don't feel it's bad, but don't really have a handle on how much time it's going to take."
Everyone else is healthy.

Mike Gilbert, director of public relations, text-messaged the following statement to The News: "Tim Connolly has an upper body musculosketal injury and will be evaluated on a week to week basis."

Musculosketal simply means the parts that make up the body. Connolly has played in just six of the Sabres' 17 games.
