Rangers To Lock Up Dubinsky Long Term?

http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/nyr081029.html

They cite the NY Post as its source. Sorry if this is old news. I'm happy to hear this, though. Apparently numerous teams were inquiring about him and Glen was having none of it, so any blockbuster trades for a Gaborik or such will not be including him.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have to wait until January until an extension is finalized?

Either way, Dubinsky's a great kid and even though he's only 22, he's a leader on this team, would love to have him for a while.

5 years 18 million, hopefully.

That is correct as far as I'm aware. Contracts signed before Jan 1 effect this years cap.

June 30

According to Larry Brooks the Rangers have until June 30. After that others can start to make offers.

I don't see Dubi going anywhere. Slats will lock it up.

Dubinsky is the new Adam Graves. Heart and soul of this team. No way, no way, no way you let him get away.

Hopefully Zherdev too, but I think it's possible he goes back to Russia.

I thought the Post said the Rangers may have difficulties here. I beleive they stated something like another team can sign Dubi to an offer sheet to $5.7MM and pay a first, second and third round. The assumption would be that if he continues to play like this, he may be attractive to other teams and with the Rangers in cap hell and $40MM committed to about 7 guys (I forget the exact amount), it would be tough to resign Dubi, with Cally's contract coming up to and others. He said perhaps they'll have to work out something to get him locked up before next Summer. I don't remember reading that the Rangers were going to start talks.

That's the way I read the article.

You can't necessarily put a price on education.

Yet that's just what the Rangers are going to have to do sometime between now and June 30 in order to prevent a competitor from establishing the price on Brandon Dubinsky, who stands to become next summer's prime Group II offer-sheet target should he reach the market.

It's going to be tough locking up the kids who well deserve a contract with the amount of money we have invested in about 5 guys for the next 5 years at least.

According to nhlnumbers.com (http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=NYR&season=0809), we'll have 32.782mil locked up in Drury, Gomez, Redden, Rozsival, and Henke in the 2011-2012 season. Assuming the cap is at about 60 mil that year, we'll have only 28 mil to fill out the rest of the roster, which is about 17 more players.

This is why I hated the Redden signing, but hey, who can be mad at a time when we're first in the NHL?

i dare say at least one of those players is long gone by then (most probably rozie), so while of course it will be difficult, it's definitely possible to still field a nice team

Other teams can't give Dubi an offer sheet until July 1st. We can begin negotiating with him at any time, though we can't sign him until January 1st or the contract will impact this year's cap.

Expect Dubi to be resigned sometime in January. We did the same with Henrik last year after signing him to a 1 year deal over the summer. Dubi isn't going anywhere.

Zherdev will probably command a bit more money, but I think we can afford to keep them both. Callahan won't take much to resign. We can probably resign him for 800K a year for 2 or 3 years.

If we are tight against the cap (or over it) we can probably trade Rozy. One way or another, I'm sure Slats will get it done.

My Checklist is almost complete then...

-Sign Dubi
-Sign Zherdev
-Get rid of Rozsival.

It's a three step process to the holy land.

This thread is false.

What the thread title should really be:
Larry Brooks would try to sign Dubinsky now if he was GM

One way or another, we will have to pay for our overpayments. Will that payment be having to let Rozsival go? I don't see the obvious GM equation here. One way or another, we have too many players and too little money.

IMO I hope for this to happen.

Z and Dubi get re-signed in January. Prucha leaves for FA, and Rozsival gets traded at draft time.

Call me crazy but I would want to lock Dubi up to a 10 year contract. Bad idea? Good idea?

If he signs him now it'll be stupid, if we wait till January 2009 then it would be smart.

Larry is not stupid when it comes to getting attention from Ranger fans. Most people's problem with him is he hardly ever writes anything rosy about the Rangers. Even today, with the Rangers sitting at 9-2-1, he had to bring up potential salary cap problems. Some fans cant handle that type of negativity. I find it entertaining.

With that said, whatever website is reporting a pending extension for Dubi (and cited the NY Post) took Brooks' article completely out of context.

Well, let's hope it happens. Nothing in the article makes me think it's close, but I'm still hopeful.
