some names really are funny.
Some parents just dont think, I know its not hockey but a girl that went to my highschool, he name was Sherri Hiscock.
I mean, its already bad enough her name is Hiscock, but they had to name her Sherri

I have a funny story with hockey player's names :

Few years ago, my young nephew and I were preparing a season of NHL 95 (or 96?) on Sega. We wanted to create a team with only self created players.

So my young "french-speaking-only" nephew sat with the annual NHL book (you know, with all the records and the drafts?) and starts reading all the draft selections of every team. We wanted to take only the cool/fun names that weren't in the NHL.

Then, my nephew came with the claim Mel Bridgman did when Ottawa got in the league. I dunno if you guys remember, but he drafted an already drafted player. So in the book, it's written "Invalid Claim". My nephew thought it was a real name, so he told it to me, for me to enter it in the "create your players" interface. I laughed my heart out.

But we did it nontheless, and Invalid Claim won the Norris at the end of our season!

Whenever I hear Jordan Tootoo or Pavel Datsyuk's name I laugh a little.

Here's some that I've liked over the years.

Haakan Loob - Calgary Flames
"Pokey" Reddick - Winnipeg Jets
Ron Tugnut - Various NHL teams

These are all "best" names IMO, not worst.

How about Bob Corkum & Zarley Zalapski ?

edit: Jody Shelley has 2 first names..... for girls....

Zarley Zalapski.. such a perfect hockey name. Like Clint Malarchuk as well..

I mean.. its pretty clear they guys weren't born to be lawyers, accountants, doctors or teachers.

"Hey Bob, I'd like you to meat my lawyer Zarley!"...

"Hello Zarley, this is my accounant Clint"

Seriously.

Born. For. Hockey.

He's not a player, but the worst name associated with hockey has to be Carolina Hurricanes' beat writer Luke DeCock.

Sharon or Anita would be worse though.

But the absolute worst would probably be Ima-Sharon.

Jaroslav Puzar always made me laugh as a 6 year old thumbing through the OpeeChee album.

Snuggerud was pretty good & although Tugnutt was a name everyone got used to, you had to laugh the 1st time you heard it.

Lance Pitlick and Pokey Reddick are my votes.

For the journalism camp, Fluto Shinzawa just doesn't sound like a hockey writer, a la Red Fisher or Roy McGregor or Roch Carrier.

Darren Puppa

Peter Ing. Its like his name is a gerund (noun); Petering.

The GM looks down from his booth, "What's that man doing down there?"
"He's Petering"
"Petering! Good God! There's women and children here!"

Not a funny name, but a story based on names.
The Isles had a guy named Randy Wood a while back.
The annoucer said, "Green enters the zone with Wood" my friend's reply, "He can tell he's has wood from way up there in the booth?"

Or one time I heard this: "Yzerman enters the zone on Foote" (Adam Foote) It sounded funny, "on foot", like he's taken off his skates.

A journalism entry: Here in Raleigh, the 'Canes beat write was, "Luke DeCock" That name is one in a million.

Not actually in hockey, but somewhat related. Richard "D*ck" Pound.

My ex-wife had a real good laugh when she first heard the name Tug-nutt.

For appropriate names, I always thought that Garth Butcher had a great name for a stay at home, in your face D. And a junior goalie in Niagara Falls I believe around 1990. Roch Belley. Take your best shot. You can't hurt Roch Belley.

I wonder if Garth is related to the Butchers that own a funeral home, named, appropriately enough...Butcher Funeral Home.
