Good question. He would need to sign a extention before anything.

Kovalchuk is not a free agent at the end of the year. So he couldn't be signed to an extension right now.

Geez, imagine Kovalchuk getting those beauty feeds from Tanguay or Markov.

Atlanta has no hurry in trading Kovalchuk, since they have him for another year after this one before he hits UFA. So right now they can afford to sit back and ask for a huge return.

This year we need to add a top 4 d-man by the deadline with the little cap room we have. If we lose, say, Kovalev and Lang (for example) over the summer, then next year we can consider a forward at the deadline, and if he's still in Atlanta, Kovalchuk would top my list.

Gainey has a long history of being after Kovalchuk... since his draft ... basically...

now... let's not fool ourselves... let's remain in reality ... but if we take our time to lay out the pros and cons ... this rumor isn't far fetched ...

1) Atlanta are PERFECT trade partners for us , from our point of view and from their point of view as well... they are not one trade away to even think about making the playoffs....

2) prospects and draft picks are something atlanta would want...

3) Don waddel is an idiot.

based on these 3 basic elements... I'd say its not impossible... unlikely , but I'd rather be ''hunting'' him than gaborik ... if we lose higgins as the ''big piece'' for us in a trade that allows us to see Kovalchuk coming the other way, I won't be able to stop laughing until we lift the cup later this spring...

can you imagine ... just a pp ...

tanguay-markov-kovy-kovy - and at that point the 5th player could be lapierre or dandy ... and we'd still be #1 pp in the league...

Allow me to burst your fantasy. Who will win the faceoff for us? Dandenault is not a center and this is not exactly Lapierre's strength.

Montreal apparently came close to acquiring him the year he was to be drafted (well his draft pick)

his cap hit is 6.3 million. these "rumors" are ridiculous. How would montreal be able to give anything close to that back?

Who will we be interested in next week?

It seems like every week we're interested in a different player.

Why would we want them to throw in an epic bust?

If you take a step back, from an Atlanta perspective it might make a little bit of sense, specially if they are convinced that he is not interested in them anymore. Perhaps he told them something in the order of trade me now or I am leaving to russia next summer..?

If you are Don Wadell and you know that you will be trading a guy like Kovalchuck would'nt it make sense to trade him while his value is at the highest possible. To me this is now ...

I bet that he would have the equivalent of 5 1st round pick and three potent players now! From a MTL standpoint you could give away the Kostsitsyns borther, Obyrne, Chipchura, MacDonagh and 3 1st round selection and even whith such an offer we would still be winning that deal.

Higgins, Pacioretty, Tanguay, Latendresse, Kovalchuck, Kovalev Not sure about you guys but to me that looks like quite a good group of wingers!

If all it costs is prospects and we can resign Kovalchuk, then yeah. It sucks giving up prospects but none of our prospects will ever become a Kovalchuk. As long as we compete and do well, it will be hard to draft a Kovalchuk type player.

Moving AK, SK and Dandenault would open up enough cap space for Kovalchuk. The difference of 600k would be doable since there is enough cap space to eat that difference.
